Creating Community Through Art: Rachel
Rachel Petrie, 1999 Harding graduate and current artist, jewelry maker, theater performer, music teacher, and actress received a grant through Irrigate-Springboard for the Arts to host The Creation Station on Saturday, September 22nd at Iris Park from 12-4.
The Creation Station is a community gathering where anyone is invited to create art in a positive and educational environment with experienced artists and art supplies available for attendees.
Rachel grew up in East Saint Paul and attended Harding because it was very much a long standing family tradition. For her, growing up on the East Side meant having a real sense of community, living in the city with a bit of wilderness, going to school with diverse peers, and trips to the Dairyette, Leo's Chow Mein and Manda's Pizza. Attending Franklin Music Magnet gave her the opportunity to gain an orchestra experience in grades 4-6. Franklin's orchestra director, Cedric Stripling provided her with a great chance to play with other students and pushed them towards a being high quality musical group. Through her years of attending Ramsey and Harding, Rachel was impacted by the amount of extra time her choir and band instructors put into their programs.
"Saint Paul Public Schools were able to give me, with their limited resources, an excellent education both inside and outside of the classroom. I had many amazing teachers, coaches, and volunteers who had a great impact on shaping the person who I am today and I am very grateful for their dedication, spirit, and commitment to their students' success. I definitely would not be where I am today if it wasn't for all of these amazing individuals and the influence that they had on me."
