Let the good times (and lobster) roll!

Today we kicked off the NMC Summer Conference with a line-up of stellar preconference workshops! Many thanks to the presenters! Here are some highlights:

Personalization:

Jeff Borden, Pearson

Brad McIlquham, Knewton

When asked what the biggest takeaway was for this workshop, Jeff had some valuable wisdom to share: "Start small."

Jeff's tips for enabling faculty to take more risks:

1. Get more support from heads and chairs of their schools and districts.

2. Be open with students and ask for feedback from them.

Zen of Teaching

Antonio Vantaggiato, Universidad del Sagrado Corazon

Vantaggiato's workshop focused on the solving the problems that arise with traditional thinking about pedagogy wherein the teacher, as the content holder, "delivers" knowledge (as if it were a pizza) while the student sits passively on the receiving end of the transmission. A great conversation ensued about how to fix this.

Connected Collective Knowledge

Philip Desenne, Paolo Ciccarese, Martin Schreiner; Harvard University

When we caught up with one of the presenters, Philip Desenne, he said the biggest takeaway from the workshop was the importance of "building collective intelligence through connected, collaborative annotations."

Digital Storytelling on the Go

Ruben Puentedura, Hippasus

As always, Ruben's session was very visually stimulating! Attendees learned to tell stories using various tools and apps, including PhotostudioHD, Strip Designer, and FlickStackr. As evidenced by one of the participant's work above, everyone became a better digital storyteller by the end of the workshop.

Reshaping Content. Engaging Students.

Apple Professional Training Staff

Some great stuff we learned about iBook Author today:

1. Videos are able to be embedded in an e-book in a way they can't be on a web page. They are protected so others cannot take that video and re-embed it.

2. Create and easily track bookmarks. Plus you can annotate by actually speaking the note.

3. You can search through entire book for a particular word or phrase.

4. Just drag and drop your text , pictures, videos on the fly into iBooks author.

#NMC12 Tweeter of the Day

Congratulations, @dcbphd, the NMC Summer Conference Tweeter of the day! This winning NMCer, Christopher Brooks, hails from the University of Minnesota. We're always excited by the discussions the conference catalyzes and we appreciate Christopher's response to our notion of students taking risks at school. Faculty deserve the same safe environment to fail. Well said, Christopher!
