Greetings!

This month's news letter looks at exciting ingredients for brain and bone health, replacing the infamous artificial colours in foods with natural solutions and improving antioxidant protection in smokers.  All our principal suppliers are as committed as we are to quality ingredients that provide real benefits.  We hope you enjoy the read!

Tocotrienols Protect against Stroke-induced Brain Damage

Researchers in the US have shown that dietary supplementation with the tocotrienol form of vitamin E can reduce stroke-induced brain damage in at least 3 different ways.

Tocotrienols facilitate the use of other blood vessels in the brain to bypass the clot, reducing cell damage in the blocked area.  They help prevent toxins from being released in nerve cells following a stroke and also trigger production of a protein that clears toxins.

Arguably most significantly, tocotrienols may reduce the chances of a repeat stroke, which occurs in 25% of stroke patients.

Tocotrienols are unfortunately not abundant in the Western diet, and should receive attention in the formulation of any cardiovascular health supplement.

Our principal Carotech is the largest and the only GMP-certified producer of tocotrienols in the world.  Visit their website or contact us for more info, studies and podcasts on tocotrienols!

Diana Naturals Puts "Southampton Six" Behind Bars with Natural Colours

Due to the findings of the now-famous Southampton University study conducted in 2007, which showed that the use of certain artificial colours in food may be related to an increase in hyperactivity in children, all food and drink products in the EU containing these colours must now bear the following warning:

MAY HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON ACTIVITY AND ATTENTION IN CHILDREN

The six offenders are:

southampton 6E102 : Tartrazine

E104 : Quinoline yellow

E110 : Sunset yellow

E122 : Azorubine, carmoisine

E124 : Rouge ponceau, ponceau 4R

E129 : Rouge allura, red 40

Natural colours expert Diana Naturals has responded by providing manufacturers with natural solutions that match these colours both in shade and intensity in various food matrices, allowing manufacturers to clean up their labels and produce child-friendly foods.

Astaxanthin Protects Smokers from Oxidative Stress

It is well known that oxidative damage to lipids, DNA and proteins is involved in the development of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Smokers are exposed to a higher level of oxidative stress compared to non-smokers, and are therefore more susceptible to these diseases.

A recent study shows that astaxanthin reduces lipid peroxidation and improves antioxidant defense significantly in otherwise healthy smokers, thereby reducing the risk of disease.
