AIDS Walk

AIDS Walk Portland:
Register & Raise Funds!

Making it easy to register, raise funds, and walk.

The easiest thing you will ever do to help beat HIV/AIDS is something you do every day -- WALK.  The hardest thing you will do to beat HIV/AIDS is ask someone to give up their money to aid in the fight, but you CAN!  And you can with minimal pain, little time, and MUCH heart.  Here is how:

Step 1:  Register to walk.  Aidswalkportland.org is new and improved.  It's easy to register, to join a team, and for friends and family to donate to your walk.  You can create your own fundraising page, set your own fundraising goal, use your own email addresses, and integrate it all within Facebook, linkedin or most other social networking sites.  Check it out, it's fun!

Step 2: Craft a meaningful message to share.  You already believe in the cause. Put that heartfelt belief into words and share it with friends, family, coworkers, and facebook friends.  You are a credible witness for this work.  You can share your experience and ask others to believe in this fight as well.

Step 3: End your message with a request for a donation.  The truth is, every dollar counts. But you should ask for what you think your people can give, and remind them that you have a goal you want to reach.  If your goal is $100, you need 10 people to give $10 each.  If your goal is $1000, you need 10 people to give $100 each -- or some other doable number.  You know your friends -- ask for what is meaningful.  Finally, add a link to your AIDS Walk fundraising page and remember to thank them for their gift.  You should also consider making your own donation.  This gets the ball rolling, and it shows others that you are truly committed.

CAP Was the Only Place I Knew to Call

By 1996, when I went in to get the results to my first ever HIV test, I only knew a couple of peopleAIDS Walk who had died from AIDS-related illnesses, and a couple others who were living with HIV. My regular doctor was not available when I wanted an appointment, and her intern was assigned for my results appointment, though I was heartily discouraged from not waiting to see my doctor. The doctor came in and started to speak in a slightly quavering voice, and I knew what she would say. I was calm, but what struck me more than my own feeling of being hit in the chest by a sledgehammer, were the tears in the doctor's eyes. I realized this was likely the first time she'd ever had to deliver this news to anyone. My insistence on that appointment time meant she had to deliver devastating news to some young man she'd never met, and I was reminded of how hugely little decisions can impact strangers.  I touched her arm and said it would be alright as I left the office.

The only thing I knew to do was to contact CAP and find out what to do. There was an immediate feeling that I had a support network and a community with the sole intention of helping me sort through all the things that would come. It WOULD, in fact, be alright. The seemingly small decision of each participant to walk in AIDSWALK, and to support CAP throughout the year, will positively impact many people we may never know, either through HIV prevention efforts, providing a support network and vital assistance to those impacted by HIV, or, like myself, just the reassurance that I wasn't alone. I know they will be there when I need them, and I want them there when the next kid calls.

- Jim Kennedy

The "I Walk" campaign was launched this year thanks to scores of local supporters who wanted to share their stories as to why they walk and their goal for helping.  This will be Jim Kennedy's first year walking, and he has set a goal of raising $200.

AIDS Walk Portland Poised to Be the Biggest Ever!

2010 brought almost 11,000 people to Pioneer Courthouse Square.  We did this in large part as a result of each of you spreading the word, bringing friends and family, and also by advertising.  Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, Genentech; Advocacy Sponsor, OHSU; Gold Sponsors, FamilyCare Inc., Fred Meyer, Hobos, Macy's, Nike and The Standard; plus Media Sponsors, Buzz 105.1, Clear Channel Outdoor, Just Out, The Oregonian, and TriMet -- we are able to do a lot more advertising than we had ever thought.  Be on the lookout for:

  • 25 billboards
  • 20 bus tails/sides
  • 7 full page ads in Just Out
  • 4-page insert in The Oregonian on Sept. 22
  • A ton of radio ads on Buzz 105.1

Why are we doing this, you ask?  HIV and AIDS have not gone away, but many folks still don't know this.  We have 11,000 people show up at the Square but less than half register and not all of them raise funds.  The work of AIDS Walk is two-fold -- educate and raise funds.  We hope to raise $400,000 and have more than 12,000 walkers this year.  We can't do it without you and the new walkers who will come because of our ads and the new donors who will respond because they have been made aware and impacted by the cause.

You can join in the process!  When you see an AIDS Walk ad, take a picture, post it on your facebook wall and then tag Cascade AIDS Project and AIDS Walk Portland.  Click here to view our page!
