HIAPBA Insurance Program  - Updates

Optima Health - Beginning July 1st, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) will join the Optima Health commercial network.  Optima Health welcomes Virginia HCA providers and facilities to our already excellent network of providers in Richmond including Bon Secours Health System and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health System

If you are a dues paying member of HIAPBA and have between 2 and 99 employees; you are eligible to receive Optima Health value added benefits for your employees and their families.   Please contact the HIAPBA Insurance Program or your broker to receive an Optima Health group or individual proposal.

Employer Sponsored 529 Virginia College Savings Plan -  Virginia's advisor sold College America plan run by the American Funds fund family was one of five plans given a "top" rating in the United States. Please review a summary of some of the benefits offered by this program for Virginia's employers:

According to the College America 529 Savings program this plan gives employees access to a tax-advantaged higher education savings vehicle that enables families to save for college. The best part for the employee is that the investments do not incur a sales charge. Whereas, if they are investing in their own plan, they are likely paying an upfront sales load. This cost savings can be substantial initially and overtime.

Likewise benefits for the employer include a potential retention tool, no setup or record keeping costs, nor are there any administrative burdens as American Funds, the advisor and the employee manage their accounts. Further there are no minimum participation limits so all you need is one employee to participate.

Inquire with the HIAPBA Insurance Program to find out more details about this excellent program offered to employers and their employees in Virginia. The HIAPBA Insurance Program can refer you to one of our preferred financial professionals to answer any questions and help with implementation.

Maintenance Crucial to Preserve Value

After a long, dark winter, the bright sun and the warm winds of summer are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? Termites and other pests in and around your home are ready for business as well.

 termites

Termites have been swarming, Carpenter Ants are seeking out homes to build new nests and Carpenter Bees are drilling into soffits and trim boards. All manner of pests are in full swing of fulfilling their life's mission of feeding, nesting and reproducing in our homes and businesses. These annual rites of spring and summer should fill us all with a sense of awe at the beauty of the natural world around us but should also remind us that some pests can damage our property and, in some cases, our health if not properly controlled.

"Regular maintenance is the key to proper pest management" says Jeffrey Johnson, President of the Virginia Pest Management Association. "Early detection and treatment of pest problems save homeowners and businesses literally thousands of dollars in damages and treatments costs. Sadly, our member companies discover aggravated termite and pest problems every day where extensive measures could have been avoided if problems had been noted earlier. In nearly every case the structure in question has not been inspected or maintained regularly by either the homeowner or a professional pest management firm."

"Termite damages in the U.S. this year will top 5 billion dollars" added Johnson. "Add to that the treatment and repair costs of Carpenter Ants, Carpenter Bees, Bed Bugs, rodents and other pests and the case for regular maintenance becomes compelling".

There are many things that homeowners and business owners can do themselves to avoid pest problems:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the structure including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed.
  •

  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry.
  •

  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.
  •

  • Repair fascia and soffits and rotted roof shingles; some insects are drawn to deteriorating wood.
  •

  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around the foundation and windows.
  •

  • Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
  •

  • Call a qualified pest professional for additional advice and treatment if necessary.
  •

Increasing Mileage Rates!

The last time we had such a large increase in the price of gas was in 2008. That year, the IRS increased the mileage rate in the middle of the year, creating a great benefit to taxpayers, while creating some confusion for tax preparers trying to complete the return at the end of the year.

Taxpayers will get the benefit of this increase for 2011 also for the second half of the year. Effective July 1, 2011, the business standard mileage rate increases from 51 cents to 55.5 cents. The medical and moving mileage rate will be 23.5 cents, up from 19 cents, while the charity mileage rate will stay unchanged at 14 cents.

The old rate will be effective for the months of January-June 2011, requiring taxpayers to split their mileage between the first half of the year and the last half of the year to calculate the two separate deductions.

Robbery Prevention Reminders from the Hanover County Sheriffs Office

ØInstruct employees on robbery procedures.

ØKeep your back doors closed and locked at all times, especially restaurants. We know it is warm and leaving the back door open creates a nice breeze through the cooking area, but this creates an opportunity for criminals to easily gain entry to commit a robbery. Remember screen doors are not secure!

ØMake sure all rear exterior doors are solid core doors.

ØInstall a "large" peephole in all exterior solid core doors.

ØMake sure all doors can be adequately secured.

ØCheck all Cameras and recording devices every week to confirm they are recording what and how you want them to record.

ØMoney drops should not be routine, but they should be done.

ØFollow policies & procedures for money handling.

ØAll exterior doors should have a door tone and each tone should be different from the other.

ØAll alarms should be tested every thirty days to insure they are working correctly.

ØConfirm all exterior lighting is clean and working correctly.

ØAll landscaping should be at least one foot away from your building, no shrubs should be higher than three feet and trees should be limbed up to five feet.

ØStore all scrap metal inside your business or in a container you are able to close and secure.
