Even in the best of times, the summer months present quite a challenge for the Emergency Feeding Program as our funding slows to a trickle even as the number of requests for food assistance rises.

To make it through, EFP relies on a reserve set aside from funds allocated to us from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  But this year, wrangling on the federal level has substantially delayed these funds.

In a normal year, these funds begin arriving in late February.  It's now July and we are still waiting.

At first glance, it may not seem much of a problem, this waiting.  We are asked to wait for things all the time and, usually, a little patience is all we need to pull us through.

But this is different.

Waiting means asking parents to tell their children that there simply isn't enough food to make their hunger go away.  Waiting means asking an elderly person to face an empty pantry and an empty stomach alone without the help they deserve.  Waiting means turning our backs on our neighbors in need.

Normally, EFP distributes over 2,000 emergency grocery bags each month to households right here in our community.  This month, we face the prospect of distributing only a fraction of what is needed.

Your financial donation now will go to work immediately filling orders already placed by our distribution partners.  Your gift now will mean that the food that has already been delayed will begin to flow again.  Your gift now will mean that those we serve will not have to wait.

If you were planning on making a donation to EFP at any time this year, we urge you to make it now.  If you were wondering if your single donation really makes a difference, we can truthfully say YES and now more than ever.

 June's Volunteer Groups

Waggener Edstrom Group

Waggener Edstrom Volunteers at EFP

In June, groups from the following organizations joined us in our Seattle warehouse to help pack emergency grocery bags:
  • Plymouth Congregational Church - Seattle
  • Lifespring Covenant Church - Loveland, CO
  • Mercer Island Summer Volunteer Program
  • Environmental & Adventure School - Kirkland
  • Waggener Edstrom - PR & Digital Communications Company
Our sincere thanks to everyone who lends a hand as we work toward our goal of helping to ensure that no one in our community will go hungry tonight.

Service Levels Suffer Large Drop in June

In June, EFP delivered only 1,027 emergency food bags to our distribution partners.  This is a nearly 54 percent decrease from the 2,222 bags delivered in the same month last year and is actually the fewest bags delivered in the month of June for the last five years.

Why? It was not because fewer of our hungry neighbors are reaching out to us.  No. The problem remains one of cash flow.

Without the FEMA funds that we budgeted to tide us over these summer months, we simply have not been able to fill all the orders we've received.

Your immediate help is needed to ensure that your hunger neighbors have the balanced nutrition they need and deserve.

GiveBIG Results

Last month's Seattle Foundation-led online fundraising event GiveBIG resulted in 31 donations to EFP totaling $5,381. Big thanks to the Seattle Foundation and their giving partners for organizing the event and our profound gratitude to everyone who took that opportunity to help feed their hungry neighbors.  It was a real shot in the arm for EFP especially in these troubling times.

More EFP News:

In June we marked two important events that we'd like to share.

If you've ever visited EFP on a Thursday, you've probably met Dock & Annice Jordan. Mr. & Mrs. Jordan are the kind of volunteers that most programs can only dream of. The Jordans come in on Thursdays to help repackage oatmeal, cereal, rice, and beans into the sizes needed for EFP grocery bags. What is truly extraordinary is that the Jordans have been doing this for over 30 years!

Mr. & Mrs. Jordan recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and EFP staff were pleased to join in the celebration with a surprise party at the warehouse. The best part? Mrs. Jordan admitted that we got her good.

The other occasion we celebrated this month was more bittersweet. After more than three years of faithful service, our receptionist and data entry specialist Rosario Falcuto has moved on. Rosario was placed at EFP by the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA). Her time at NAPCA has come to an end, but she will long remain in the hearts of all us here who have worked with her.

We wish Rosario the very best in all that lies before her.
