Delegates vs. Voting Members
I s your congregation sending delegates or is it sending voting members to the annual synod assembly June 8-10 in Springfield, Mass.? There is a BIG difference. "Delegate" is an older term used prior to the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), when lay persons from congregations were required to vote as instructed by their congregation. When the ELCA was formed in 1988, a delegate became a voting member, meaning that the representative could vote his or her own conscience, without being instructed by the congregation. So, congregations should be sending "voting members," and not delegates.
