Around the Synod

Ordination Set for Jan. 28

Heidi Marie Lembke Johnston, daughter of an ELCA  Army chaplain, has accepted a call to serve as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, Quincy, Mass. She will be ordained Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m.at Christ Lutheran Church, Natick, Mass.  As an "Army brat," Johnston has enjoyed the adventures of many places in the United States and abroad. In 2004, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theatre from Syracuse (N.Y.) University. In 2007, she left her job as an executive assistant at an Estee Lauder company in New York City to enter Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, later transferring to Union Theological Seminary in NYC, where she graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 2011. During her internship, Johnston served Immanuel Lutheran Church, Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood. She also served as vicar at her home congregation, Advent Lutheran Church in NYC. While in Texas, she met Capt. Benjamin David Johnston, a West Point graduate, whom she married in July 2011.  He has completed his military commitment and will begin studies at Berklee College of Music, Boston.

Pastors Pen Books on Social Media, Community

Two synod pastors have written books which will be available this spring.

Pr. Keith R. Anderson, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Woburn, Mass., has co-authored Click2Save: The Digital Ministry Bible (Morehouse 2012), a hands-on guide to using social media in ministry. Co-author is Elizabeth Drescher from the Silicon Valley in California, an educator, scholar, writer and speaker on Christian spirituality, who connected with Anderson through Facebook and his blog. Anderson was ordained in 2003.

The Rev. Paul F. Goetting of Worcester, Mass., has written Members Are Ministers: The Vocation of All Believers (Cascade Books, 2012), which identifies the positive change necessary to achieve greater unity in congregations and to reduce conflict within the church. This book reduces the social distances between pastors and people, promotes an approach that generates a greater sense of community and enables a clearer corporate and personal witness to the faith.

Above all, it recognizes the Word as crucial for effecting change in our emerging new culture. Goetting, now retired, has served the Lutheran church through an active career in three congregations and seven interim ministries before his retirement.

New Ministry Receives Wheat Ridge Grant to Aid Neighbors in Need in Bridgeport, Conn., Area

Neighbor to Neighbor, a new ministry in the Bridgeport, Conn., area, sponsored by Lutheran Social Services (LSS), has received a $40,000 grant from the Grants Plus Program of Wheat Ridge Ministries. The GrantsPlus Program supports new and innovative health and human care programs led by congregations and nonprofit organizations affiliated with the Lutheran community.

Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) is a new ministry that emerged from a collaboration of eight Lutheran congregations in the Bridgeport, Conn., area, in partnership with LSS. Their desire to reach out and respond to their neighbors in need, inspired by Christ's love, is an expression of the LSS and Wheat Ridge missions.  In turn, they are inspiring their members to offer their time, talent and compassionate friendship to isolated, frail elders in need in their congregations and in the community.  The mission of N2N is to make life a little easier for our older and disabled friends to enhance their ability to remain in their own homes longer and with fewer worries.

The eight participating congregations include:

Salem, Bridgeport, Conn.

Good Shepherd, Monroe, Conn.

Grace, Stratford, Conn.

Holy Cross (LCMS), Trumbull, Conn.

Holy Trinity (Slovak Zion), Trumbull, Conn.

Joseph's Coat of Many Colors, Bridgeport, Conn.

Our Saviour's, Fairfield, Conn.

Trinity, Shelton, Conn.

Wheat Ridge Ministries is a nonprofit organization that helps a variety of health and human care initiatives get off the ground by providing the initial funding and support they need to thrive.

Doing What Matters

Doing What Matters: Listening to Each Other
Doing What Matters SymbolFor more than two years now, we have been wrestling with the question, "What in the world is God up to, and how can we help?" Sometimes it's good for a congregation -- and a synod -- to spend intentional time in prayer and conversation to answer that question together. That's what the "Doing What Matters" process in New England is all about. One outcome of our work has been a new purpose statement and set of guiding principles:

The Purpose of the New England Synod:

to go where love leads, to serve where love calls

Our Guiding Principles:

pray always

give of ourselves

stand with others

embrace change and diversity

make room for joy

The next phase of this process is the one we are in now -- gathering information about the "assets, wows and needs" in our congregations, and in the communities we serve as the New England Synod. This information will help our new bishop and staff to identify the strategic directions where we will begin to focus our energy, attention and resources over the next few years. This is one of the most important things you can do to participate in God's mission for our synod. You can begin this process whenever it makes sense for you and your congregation, but we are asking that all information you gather be returned to the Synod Office no later than May 15.

Our synod leaders have designed a "Toolkit" to help you gather this information in your congregation and community. Click HERE to download a copy, as well as other resources.
