Going Green

St. Peter's Solar Panels Lead to Unique Outreach

In 1993, the ELCA adopted a statement entitled Caring for Creation to demonstrate its deep concern for the environment, locally and globally. Throughout the New England Synod, more and more churches are "going green," implementing creation care in the areas of worship and education, building and grounds. One of those churches, St. Peter's, Harwich, Mass., has installed 142 solar panels which have significantly lowered its heating bill, reduced its carbon footprint and led the congregation to a unique solar panel "outeach." Read all about it on the synod website's green page.

Learning Opportunities

Theological Education for Youth Offers Two Summer Programs

Are there high school students in your congregation interested in learning more about who they are as Lutherans? Well, Theological Education with Youth (TEY) is again offering two summer programs that might help.

► TEY Crossroads Event for teens now in the ninth or tenth grade, June 23-30 at Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary (a one week exploration of issues of justice, advocacy and urban ministry);

► TEY Summer Theological Academy for teens now in Grades 10 or 11, July 28-Aug. 5 at Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary (nine days of theological exploration and discovery, including courses on ethics, scripture and ministry and exploration of call and vocation).

For further information, contact Chelle Huth, director of TEY, at chuth@ltsg.edu or 717-338-3038.

Yale Offers Lutheran Studies

Did you know that Yale Divinity School (YDS) in New Haven, Conn., offers both a certificate and diploma in Lutheran studies? The Lutheran Studies Program is intended primarily to provide support for candidates for ordination in the ELCA, but it is open to all students. Two candidates from the New England Synod for ordained ministry currently are studying at YDS.
