synod assembly logoHeading into "The Lion's Den"to Help Make a Difference

With over 100 voting members and registered visitors participating, "The Lion's Den" is the largest service project planned for the Day of Service at synod assembly. Even the mayor of Springfield will be involved. The Rev. Greg Dyson, whose excitement about the project is contagious, is looking forward to Saturday, June 4. "This mission activity will give us a chance to see the great city of Springfield," he says, "and then to interact with some of the residents to help spread the love of Christ among them."

Buses will arrive after the Saturday morning worship service to pick up the workers who were assigned to this project. Along the way, attendees will be treated to such sights as the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Springfield Armory, and City Hall before reaching their destination: The Lion's Den Youth Outreach Center. "The Lion's Den is a safe place for youth to encounter Christ," explains Greg, who is in charge of this project. Once there, voting members will focus their energy on cleaning up the ministry space, and creating a carnival atmosphere for some deserving children. "We'll get right down to work, and then host a neighborhood party for the kids," Greg says, "so bring your gloves, cleaning supplies, gardening tools, outdoor games for the kids, and a willing heart. We're going to spend the afternoon impacting the world for Christ!"

Emergency Kits for Lutheran Social Services: "Some Assembly Required"

In recent months, churches throughout New England have been asked to gather materials together for Lutheran Social Services. If you were surprised to see a request in your church newsletter for a "basic necessity" such as a shower curtain, be assured that it will be going to a very good cause. As part of the Day of Service at synod assembly, attendees will be putting together "Faith in Action" Emergency Kits comprised of various items collected from every congregation in the synod. Once completed, these much-needed school and hygiene materials will be given to immigrants and refugees as a way of showing a warm welcome to these New Americans.

Assembly bookstore to offer resources on environmental stewardship

Once again, Joyce Simon, manager of the bookstore at Andover Newton Theological School (ANTS), Newton, Mass., and a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Natick, Mass., will set up the bookstore at the synod assembly. She plans to bring an assortment of books on the biblical, theological and practical aspects of environmental stewardship, along with other material. Simon is an avid environmentalist and bookseller. The bookstore at ANTS is the only theological bookstore in greater Boston.

Synod office moves to Springfield during assembly; Worcester office reopens June 7

During the synod assembly, the Office of the Bishop will move to the first floor of the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The telephone number will be 1-413-271-3605. This phone number will be in service only during the three days of assembly. The Synod House at 20 Upland St., Worcester, will be closed from Friday, June 3, through Monday, June 6. It will reopen Tuesday, June 7.
