Faith in Action Service Team Prepares for 2011 Synod Assembly
With less than a month to go, the Faith in Action service team is getting down to the nuts and bolts of preparing for synod assembly....literally. They are working hard to assess the many sites where participants will be located - making supply lists, visiting lumber yards, and exploring garden centers to find what they need.
Fortunately, the Holy Spirit is hard at work, too. Many local businesses are ready and eager to support our efforts. They have provided everything from a sturdy four-foot section of stockade fence for Monika out in Ware to 60 pretty pansies. Now, those transplanted flowers will bloom where they will be planted - at the memorial garden at Friends of the Homeless as well as the garden at the transitional apartment building for New England Farm Workers.
If you registered for assembly without indicating a preference on your form, expect the Faith in Action service team to contact you soon. They will help you get connected to a project that suits your skills and talents. Their prayer is that God will open hearts, minds and hands to all they will serve, thus embracing the ELCA motto, "God's work, Our hands."

Assembly offering to support the ELCA Malaria Campaign
The offering during Sunday morning's worship at the synod assembly will go to the ELCA Malaria Campaign (www.elca.org/malaria). Congregations, Sunday schools and other church groups are asked to consider taking a special local offering that their voting members could bring to the synod assembly. Checks should be made payable to the New England Synod, with "Malaria" on the memo line. The 2009 ELCA Churchwide Assembly authorized the ELCA to continue to develop a campaign to contain and prevent malaria in Africa. It also called on church members to learn about malaria and other diseases intensified by poverty, and asked members to "prayerfully support" the ELCA's commitment.

NE Synod Leaders Gather for "Doing What Matters" Event in Arlington
Kelly Fryer, Tana Kjos and Bishop Margaret Payne were there...and so were conference deans, rostered leaders, church committee heads and members of Synod Council. Those who attended this second "Doing What Matters" Leaders Event also felt God's presence in Arlington, Mass., as they came together to consider the input from seven mission area assemblies and gatherings. Taped on the walls inside St. Paul's Lutheran Church were oversized newsprint sheets filled with the creative (and colorful) contributions of some 382 attendees. On the tables were the key learnings and lessons captured from those sheets. And before these synod leaders was the daunting task of honing in on God's purpose for us as a synod - right here, right now in the many and varied places we serve in this place called New England. There was lively conversation....quiet reflection ...and the stimulating exchange of ideas. So, what comes next? As the Rev. Lisa Hazelwood says, "What comes out of all this will not encompass all we believe or all we are called to do. But what we're hoping for is a statement of purpose that might shape our life and work together as we go forward. We are also getting a sense of clarity about the principles that might guide our decision-making. They're still undergoing some fine-tuning by our writing team, but they will eventually articulate how we want to live into God's purpose for us. We look forward to synod assembly where these principles and our purpose statement will be shared."

Vermont congregation featured in May issue of "The Lutheran"; Connecticut pastor quoted
What's happening in the church, locally and globally? In the May issue of "The Lutheran," the monthly ELCA magazine, see how a "ripple" started by an ecumenical youth ministry in Vermont, which includes Ascension Lutheran Church, South Burlington, is creating a wave of peacemakers ... travel to Beit Jala to see how the Lutheran church is growing environmental awareness among Palestinians ... learn about a Nashville congregation that opens its doors to singers and songwriters, good music and the community... and go to the experts for advice on extreme home makeovers - Lutheran style. Also, read what Pr. H. Gaylon Barker reported about e-giving at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Ridgefield, Conn. (Did you know that the ELCA's "Simply Giving Program" offers the newest form of electronic giving - texting? This allows members the flexibility of sending a donation immediately to a cause being uplifted during worship, such as an appeal for disaster relief.) Check it all out, and subscribe today, at www.thelutheran.org.

ELCA sponsors second video contest
Exciting news! The ELCA is holding another video contest for 2011, this time on the theme, "What does it mean to 'live Lutheran'?" Entries will be accepted May 17-June 30. Several New England congregations submitted videos in 2009 on the theme "God's work. Our hands." that were seen and heard throughout the ELCA, so this is a great way to share your faith story. Congregations and individuals could win a $3,000 ministry grant or a $1,500 cash prize. There also are prizes for the congregation and individual entries receiving the most popular vote. Plus, a selection of videos will be shown at the 2011 ELCA Churchwide Assembly this August.
Visit www.livinglutheran.com/contest to get the information you need, including tips to help everyone get started.
