BEAUTY!!
What is beauty?  How about this sunset?  Now, try to explain it with words...you can't!  It's just beauty.  No words, just be with it.  That is all that you can do.

Practice your Yoga like this, with beauty, with grace, without words, judgements, criticism.  Just BE with your body, mind, breath, and breathe into your body like this!  Breathe into your mind like this! BE BEAUTY! 
Then you will TRULY BE ALIVE!

Yoga Pose of the Month is:  Hasta Padangusthasana I    

(in sanskrit hasta = hand, pada = foot, angustha = toe, asana = pose)

This variation utilizes props to aid in balance, and helps to safely build strength and flexibility.  See "Light on Yoga" by Mr. Iyengar for the classic version.  Stand in Tadasana with a chair placed at the wall.  With a looped belt, step left foot into one end, and place the other end of the loop at the right leg crease.  Extend the right leg to the back of the chair, so the heel rests on the back and the foot presses the wall.  Tighten the loop so it is firm and it is keeping the right hip down to traction (add space in) the hip.  Loop a second belt around the right foot and hold the two ends with long arms. Torso is squared to the wall.  Stand strong, and use arms to lift the spine as they pull the two ends of the belt.  Both legs are straight and strong.  Breathe and elongate the legs, arms and spine.  Repeat to the other side. 

 

Benefits: builds strength in the body, especially the legs and spinal muscles. Teaches balance.   Tractions the hips.  Lengthens the leg muscles, especially the hamstrings.

Yoga for Scoliosis Pose of the Month is...
Supta Padangusthasana I

(in sanskrit supta= reclined, pada = foot, angustha = toe, asana = pose)

Lay supine (on the back) with feet pressing wall, tailbone and shoulders tucked. Pad the cave side with a towel to support it. Pillow the head if needed. Place one end of a looped belt around the left foot at the wall, and the other end into the right hip crease. The left leg stays straight and strong, foot upright.

 

Bend the right foot into chest and squeeze it in. Tighten or loosen the strap as needed so it is taut. Bring the second strap around the right foot and raise it vertically. Both legs are straight and strong. Press elbows to floor by ribcage to tuck shoulders and lift heart.
Breathe and allow the legs, spine, and body to elongate.  Repeat to the other side. 

 

Benefits: Tractions the hips, elongates the leg muscles, especially the hamstrings, builds strength in the hands, legs, torso.  Supine adds support for the spine.  Lengthens the higher hip and opens the cave side well.

BACK CARE CLINIC this Saturday, Nov. 12!!!

at Yoga Among Friends in Downers Grove  

 

Once per month, Saturdays,  2:30 - 4:30 pm
Cost  $35, preregistration required (call Yoga Among Friends)  

 

This series will focus on the entire spine, and then end in December on a Full Moon with Restorative poses to heal the spine!

Yoga for Scoliosis classes at Yoga Circle are now shown on YOU TUBE!!!

That's right, Yoga Circle classes are recorded for viewing on You Tube.  Type in youtube.com into your browser, then search: YogaCircleChicago's Channel, then the home page comes up.  In the uploads box, click on "search all" and look for all of the class sequences for Gabriel's classes (where I assist) and my Yoga for Scoliosis classes.  Now you have NO EXCUSE for missing practices, since you can view the sequences here and practice with them.  This is another great reference for you to check out!   

 

Come to my classes there and YOU may get your 15 minutes of fame via a photo in a pose!  (only if you want to...this is not required)
