Welcome to my newsletter sharing and celebrating my life long journey into YOGA!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> How lightly do you tread on the Earth?
Do you ever pay attention to your feet? I ask that question of my students often.
We move through our lives without thought or awareness of how we step into life.
Lets look at this literally, and metaphorically:
Literally, how do you walk? How do you stand? Are your feet crunched into shoes? Do you walk bare footed ever? Can you feel the earth through those thick cushioned soles? Can you spread your toes well? Can you move your toes well? Are your arches collapsed and lazy or high and springy? Do your feet turn out or turn in? Are they evenly placed, a matched set? Or do they have a mind of their own, one turned in and one turned out? Are they puffy and swollen?
Metaphorically, do you feel grounded or flighty? Are you rooted and centered? Does half of you go one direction, and the other half the opposite, never revealing a true direction? Are you truly connected to nature? Do you feel strong and planted? Do you feel confident, competent, reliable? Are you in the present moment, present space? Are you listening from a place of rootedness? Are you leaving a heavy oblivious footprint or treading lightly with respect and honoring?
These are all questions I ask myself often. Become aware of how you PLACE yourself in your life and in this world. Be a participant, from a strong rooted presence, from the soles of the feet upward. Take your shoes off and dare to be naked, grounded,
in the here and now!

Yoga Pose of the Month is: Baddha Konasana
(in sanskrit baddha = bound, kona = angle, asana = pose)
Baddha Konasana is a wonderful hip/pelvis opening pose, but it also serves the feet. This pose rebuilds the arches. Begin by sitting on a few folded blankets to give you a high seat. This height allows the back to sit taller especially if you have tight hips or back muscles. Bring the soles of the feet together with the pinkie toe sides pressed well and evenly, and the big toe sides touching lightly, even falling apart like an opened book. Make sure the feet are even on the midline of the body. Knees open wide. Open the toes, spread them apart and watch the arches activate. I like to sit at a wall with a block held vertically at the dorsal spine to help move it from back to front. Also try it with the block horizontal across the shoulderblades. Both allow the spine to lift and chest to open. Press the hands on the blankets to aid in lifting the spine taller. Then, rest the hands lightly on the legs, their weight is enough, do not force the legs apart, OUCH!
Later, after you become practiced with this version, you can practice the pose classically, seated on the floor and binding the feet with your hands. Spine must lift well and chest opened well.

Yoga for Scoliosis Pose of the Month is... Virabhadrasana I,
(in sanskrit virabhadra= was a warrior in Hindu legend, asana = pose) a. b.
a. Face a wall and step your left foot forward, up on a block. Bend those toes up the wall. Hold a second vertical block to the wall with the shin. Steepled fingertips press the wall, shoulder height and width. Step your right foot back in a lunge leg position: toes under, knee bent. Square up hips and shoulders to wall. The torso is like Tadasana. With the bend in the back leg knee, tuck back of pelvis down, and tilt front of pelvis up, so pelvis is balanced front to back. Stay squared in hips and shoulders. b. Keep alignment in hips and pelvis as you slowly and mindfully challenge the back leg straighter and straighter. Inner thigh on back leg lifts as heel lowers. You will feel the psoas muscles stretch in the straightening leg. Repeat to the second side. This pose works the uneven hip muscles, iliopsoas group in back leg, and buttocks and hamstrings in front leg. Builds strength in body, especially legs, hips and feet. Have a HOOT! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< |
