Mrs. Scott's Science Inquiry class connected with
Mrs. Zacharias' Industrial Design I & II classes to get a little help with their Marshmallows in Flight STEM Project. The science students' goal for the Marshmallows in Flight STEM Project was to design and build a small scale trebuchet or catapult out of every day, small scale materials. The catapult or trebuchet had to be able to launch a large marshmallow with enough accuracy to land in a pie tin (in scientific terms...they tested and refined their design to maximize the horizontal distance the marshmallow traveled, reported on the concepts in science behind the launcher, researched a historical aspect of the launcher, and mathematically calculated distances and velocities for the marshmallow). With the help of the Industrial Design students they also computer animated the launcher. Over the course of 4 days, the Industrial Design students taught them how to create and animate their catapults and trebuchets using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). The students became the teachers! The animations were used during the Science Inquiry class' presentations.
