Students in the Spotlight

Science InquiryMrs. Scott's Science Inquiry class connected with Mrs. Zacharias' Industrial Design I & II classes to get a little help with their Marshmallows in Flight STEM Project. The science students' goal for the Marshmallows in Flight STEM Project was to design and build a small scale trebuchet or catapult out of every day, small scale materials. The catapult or trebuchet had to be able to launch a large marshmallow with enough accuracy to land in a pie tin (in scientific terms...they tested and refined their design to maximize the horizontal distance the marshmallow traveled, reported on the concepts in science behind the launcher, researched a historical aspect of the launcher, and mathematically calculated distances and velocities for the marshmallow). With the help of the Industrial Design students they also computer animated the launcher. Over the course of 4 days, the Industrial Design students taught them how to create and animate their catapults and trebuchets using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). The students became the teachers! The animations were used during the Science Inquiry class' presentations.

Empowering Students for Life
   Snapshot of Success!
trent albrightDr. Trent Albright, '99
Ophthalmology Resident

Trent is currently finishing an Ophthalmology residency and will be starting his Cornea fellowship training in July 2011 at Emory University. Following in his grandfather and father's footsteps as optometrists, Trent chose a career in Ophthalmology because he particular enjoys the surgical aspects of the specialty.

As a resident at Cook County Hospital he treats eye disease either medically or surgically specializing in cataract surgery, corneal transplants, Lasik and other refractive procedures. He primarily works with underprivileged and uninsured patients, and finds great reward in the position.

During his time at St. Francis DeSales High School, the encouragement that he received from his coaches had an incredible impact on is life. "I don't think I ever would have served in the National Guard had it not been for the encouragement and mentorship of Coach Slupski," said Albright. Trent chose to enlist in the Ohio Air National Guard after his high school graduation and served as an Aircraft Mechanic for eight years. He was deployed to Spain and Turkey in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

There are simple tips that Trent remembers from high school that he finds helpful in his personal and professional life including, "the easy thing isn't always the right thing" and "do the little things right." Paying it forward, Trent offers advice for students considering a career in medicine. "Work hard, be persistent, and believe in yourself.
