Freshman Bailey Cadena (pictured left) will receive the Girl Scout Red Sash of Merit during Scout Day with Bishop Frederick Campbell on Sunday at Church of the Resurrection. The Girl Scout Red Sash of Merit serves as an award for outstanding Catholic scouts in the Diocese of Columbus. These scouts demonstrate leadership, accept responsibility, and are active in their troop, community, and parish. Over the past 18 months, Bailey has volunteered as a student helper at Gahanna Safety Town, in the nursery at Church of the Resurrection, at St. Matthew's summer festival, at the Columbus Zoo as a Zoo Aide, and at the Special Olympics. As a part of her Silver Award, Bailey and two other girls from her troop, educated the community about Muscular Dystrophy and raised enough money to send four children to MDA summer camp. She also serves as a Student Ambassador at DeSales.
Junior Kasey Moore has been selected to represent St. Francis DeSales High School at the YWCA Bright Futures Program. Kasey will attend Saturday workshops from February through May on topics covering: leadership development, social justice, and positive self-image. Two community service activities are also planned. These young ladies from all around Franklin County will attend panel discussions with female Columbus Business leaders and Women of Achievement members. A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded at the conclusion of the workshops to one young lady.

 | Protecting God's Children
| | We will be offering a Protecting God's Children session at DeSales on Wednesday, February 8th starting at 6:30 pm. Go to www.virtus.org to register.
FastFingerprints will be available at 5:30 pm for anyone who needs them as well.
Please remember that you need to attend a Protecting God's Children session in order to volunteer at the school. To see all of our volunteer opportunities, please view the Volunteer page on our school website. It is a great way to get involved! Speaking of volunteering...there are several ways you can help out at the upcoming Casino Royale (see below). |
 | Casino Royale Volunteers Needed | | |
Our dedicated volunteers are the backbone to the success of Casino Royale Live and Silent Auction Gala. Plans are underway and we expect this year's auction to be another fantastic event; however, we need your help!
If you have a few hours a week, a month, or are available on the day of the auction, we welcome your help. Please take a look at the list of committees and let us know how you'd like to participate. Contact Julie Yale, Event Chair by emailing jyale@insight.rr.com to sign up for any of the following committees:
Decorating Committee
Responsible for the design, planning and set-up of the decorations for the event.
Donation Committee
Gather donations from local community members, businesses, school organizations, and families of SFDHS for the silent and live auctions. Also aid in preparing item descriptions for the auction catalog and prepare bid sheets for each item.
Raffle Committee
Responsible for obtaining a large ticket raffle item for the auction and organizing ticket sales both prior to and at the event. Also responsible for gathering smaller ticket items used for the casino gaming raffles.
Set-up /Tear-down Committee
Help with set-up the day prior to the event. May need to be at one meeting, but otherwise, not much up-front planning needed. Set-up committee members will help move the objects from DeSales to ODU then get everything in place where needed. After the event on Saturday, we need this committee to help gather all decorations and items not sold to be stored.
Casino Gaming Committee
Responsible for securing a casino company for the Casino Royale Live and Silent Auction.
Reservation Committee
Responsible for tracking all incoming invitations and coordinate the seating arrangements.
Food/Beverages
Help with planning the menu and coordinating the bar.
Data Entry Committee
Responsible for entering all important data into auction computer program. Need to work with Check-in/Check-Out committee.
Check-in/Check-out
The Check-in and Check-out committee will be responsible for making sure our guests' experience is smooth and worry free. Although Check-in and Check-out are two separate responsibilities, these roles are closely tied and should be thought of as a team. The committee should have two chairs: one responsible for the role of the Check-in and the second of the cashiers or Check-out.

 Dr. Timothy DeVol '82
Professor of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, Clemson University The influence of his father and several other mentors cemented Dr. Timothy DeVol's path to his current position at Clemson University. His father's influence led DeVol to initially pursue a degree in Physics at The Ohio State University, where he soon discovered that Engineering Physics accepted computer programming as a replacement for the foreign language requirement of Physics. DeVol went on to earn his BS in Engineering Physics from OSU with nuclear engineering as his technical elective. A teaching assistantship in the OSU Mathematics Department and conversations with John Bendekovic II (father of classmate John Bendekovic III) helped DeVol decide to pursue a career as a professor. He earned his MS and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan, where he had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant, researching assistant and was a graduate research fellow in the Department of Energy Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Fellowship program (1990-92). DeVol currently works at Clemson where he had his post-doctoral appointment. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the American Chemical Society, Health Physics Society and the American Nuclear Society. DeVol received the Clemson University Innovation Award in 2003 and 2004 and the Elda E. Anderson Award, presented to young members (under 40) of the Health Physics Society. DeVol and his wife, Nancy, reside in Clemson, SC, and have 4 children. |
