September 11th Offertory Hymn

For the Offertory Hymn on September 11th we will be using these words, to the tune of "O God our Help in Ages Past"; the title of the hymn is: When Sudden Terror Tears Apart

When sudden terror tears apart

the world we thought was ours,

we find how fragile strength can be,
how limited our powers.

As tower and fortress fall, we watch

with disbelieving stare

and numbly hear the anguished cries
that pierce the ash-filled air.

Yet most of all we are aware

of emptiness and void:

of lives cut short, of structures razed,
of confidence destroyed.

From this abyss of doubt and fear

we grope for words to pray,

and hear our stammering tongues embrace
a timeless Kyrie.

Have mercy, Lord, give strength and peace,

and make our courage great;

restrain our urge to seek revenge,
to turn our hurt to hate.

Help us to know your steadfast love,

your presence near as breath;

rekindle in our hearts the hope
of life that conquers death.

Sunday School Teachers
St. Luke's Youth Outreach

The future of St. Luke's is in our children.  Every fall, families sign up their children for Christian Education, or Sunday School.   These children attend classes to learn more about being an Episcopalian, more about the Bible, and more about being a good Christian.

But they can't learn these things without teachers.  And right now, we only have a handful of teachers for possibly more than 60 children.

Our curriculum is very easy to follow, and both Joy and Stacey would be happy to sit down with you to go over the lessons, and to answer any questions you may have.

Anyone is welcome to teach.  You do not need to be a parent to teach.   Many of our teachers find that it fills them spiritually; that it helps them see answers to their own questions, and that it also makes them feel good to make a difference in a child's life.

Please contact Joy Catron or Stacey Stratton if you would like more information about becoming a Sunday School teacher.

Joy - joymcatron@hotmail.com and Stacey - stacey762@gmail.com  Thank you!

Meet Interviewee

As many of you know we received a large bequest from Dick Clay, designated for youth ministry. All summer a committee (Marylou Butler, Michael McKinnon, Joy Catron, Stacey Stratton, Lisa Rafferty, Janine Beal, Grant Barber) have reviewed resumes and held first interviews. The Rev Joyce Scheyer will be joining us the weekend of Sept. 24th for a second interview; she will also give a children's sermon, visit classrooms, and so forth.

Calling All Young Singers!
September is here, and the Youth Choirs are starting up soon!  Welcome back to all the wonderful singers who already are part of our happy groups, and we always welcome new young people to join us.

If you have a young person in grades 2 - 6, we'd love to have them join the Angel Choir, which meets directly after church (during coffee hour) upstairs in the choir loft for about 20 minutes.  We only meet on days when there is Sunday School, and sing in church about once a month.  We work on music reading readiness and finding joy in choral singing.

If you are in grades 7 - 12, then the Young Adult Choir is for you!  This dedicated group of fabulous singers meets every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:45pm (except for school vacations) and also sings in church about once a month.  We work on 2 and three part music, and also sing with the Senior Choir several times each year.

Angel Choir begins Sunday, September 18.
Young Adult Choir (YACs) begin Thursday, September 15

If you have any questions, please e-mail Deb Carleton at or visit our Facebook page.
Appalachian Service Project
Do you want an amazing summer experience? Join the Appalachian Service Project!

Our first meeting for our June 2012 trip will be at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church on Country Way on September 18th at 7:30pm.  Teens grades 10th through 12th are encouraged to come to the meeting to hear about ASP.   ASP is a week of repairing homes for desperately needy people.  We encourage adults who would like to chaperone to come hear about the ASP program.  Building skills not necessary, just the desire to help others and to guide the teens through this week.  The week is hard work, but the fun and camaraderie is tremendous! Through ASP we spread God's love and caring by helping others.  We have daily devotionals on our trip to center us on our mission.  The trip can be life changing for both you and the families we serve.  If you want more information, please e-mail Maureen Keys or call 781-545-1348.

ASP 2011 Presentation: Please join us at 9am on Sunday, September 18th in the Gordon Room for a presentation of the 2011 ASP trip.  We have a video of the trip that will give you a peek at what your purchase of stocks did for us in funding our trip.  For anyone considering coming on the trip, this will give you a sample of the week that you will treasure in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.  Hopefully many of our members from the trip will be there to share their personal stories.  If you have any questions please e-mail Maureen Keys or call 781-545-1348

Harvest Fair- November 5th
Harvest Pumpkins
As the summer is in full swing it is hard to think about the Fall ... but some of us need to start getting ready for the Harvest Fair.

The Fair will be on November 5th this year.  Please try to give it a little bit of thought.   Is there something that might be of interest for the Silent Auction - a service you could provide, tickets to an event, gift certificate to an area restaurant, a get-a-way spot for a couple of days??  There are all sorts of things that would be very appropriate for the Fair go'ers.
After doing your best to find things for the Yard Sale on the 6th of August - while you're in the mood - maybe you might find something for the White Elephant Table, too.

You will be hearing more of the needs for this year in the coming weeks and months.  So get ready for another terrific Fair.

If you see or think of any ideas or suggestion for the Fair please get in touch with Maureen Keys (781-545-1348) or Susanna Dietz (781-545-6109).
Thank You from Joan Powers
Thank you to all who sent me cards, e-mails and phone calls in sympathy for Fred's death.  Thank you for your donations to St. Luke's outreach in memory of Fred. We had a wonderful tribute and service celebrating Fred's life. I appreciated all who attended and it was great seeing the church filled.-  Joan
Taste of Scituate

Dear Saint Luke's Parishioners,

Saint Luke's is excited to announce our second annual Taste of Scituate. We have partnered again with dozens of local restaurants for this multi-day event, providing fun opportunities for families to explore the tastes of local restaurants, while at the same time supporting community service projects.

Throughout October, the 31-Day Giveaway, gives gift certificates each day valued at $50, $75 or $100 for a local restaurant. We need your help to reach our goal of selling at least 750 tickets. Prizes will be given to the top-sellers, so the more you sell...the more you can win!

Join us on November 13th for the Finale Gala for specialty samples from local restaurants and the Grand Prizes Raffle.  Come taste a variety of great food, enjoy the fellowship, and win prizes.  We encourage you to get involved and help us plan, set-up and run this community-wide event and help Saint Luke's shine.

Afterward, participate in The Scavenger Hunt and have fun exploring local restaurants, hunting for answers to puzzling questions, and increase your chances to win the Final Grand Prize.

Go online now and help show our sponsors that it is worth supporting the Taste of Scituate, and "Like" us on Facebook or "Follow" us on Twitter.

If you would like to help Saint Luke's support our Outreach Programs, please get involved, either a little or a lot. To find out how, or if you have any questions, please e-mail John Hudanich or call 781.234.8631.

Peace Corps Volunteer
Becky Keys has been training in the Philippines since July 3rd, and will be swearing in as a Peace Corps Volunteer on September 16th in Manila.  She has been living with a host family in La Trinidad, Benguet, where she has been co-teaching with an English teacher at Benguet National High School.  Becky has been learning Ilokano, the local dialect in the Cordilleras region of the country.  After swearing in, she will be moving to Lamut, Ifugao, where she will teach English for the next two years at Ifugao Provincial Science High School. Becky is loving the culture of the Philippines, and is thrilled to be part of such an amazing opportunity. If you'd like to follow Becky's Blog, contact Maureen Keys.
Growing with God

2011 has been an amazing year for gardens!! We love making jam, pickles, and pasta filled with fresh veggies. In the spring St. Luke's put up tomato plants for adoption. Do you have an abundance of fruit? Here is one suggestion for a simple but yummy sauce. Please consider making a double or triple batch and bring a jar, or two or three to share with St. Luke's.  This is a great activity for kids, encourages them to eat their veggies and if you bring some to share all proceeds benefit the Scituate Food Pantry!

Tomato and Red Pepper Sauce

  • 4 large tomatoes
  • 2 large red bell peppers, seeded and diced
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Carefully add the tomatoes to the water, and boil until the skin begins to split. Remove from the water, cool under cold running water, and peel off the skin.
  2. Place tomatoes into a large skillet, and mash with a potato masher. Mix in the bell peppers, onion and garlic. Simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until onions and peppers are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
