Eco-friendly Design Trends for Fall 2011
'Before & After'
Greetings!
I had a wonderful time visiting the Las Vegas World Market last week.  It's one of the largest home furnishings markets in the world.  Barbara, my office manager, and I felt like we covered all 5 million square feet of showroom space in the 3 days we were there!  One of the highlights of our trip was hearing former President Bill Clinton, who was the keynote speaker.  His message was very inspirational.

It was exciting to see all of the new colors, products, and trends.  While there we spent a lot of time visiting our favorite showrooms, taking in all of their beautiful new offerings, and making notes of all of the fabulous new pieces we'll be adding to our Home Accessories & Accent Furniture Online Boutique very soon.  As summer starts to come to an end we're extending our 25% savings on any purchase through the end of August.  Just enter SUMMERTIME in the coupon code area when you checkout.  There are some beautiful pieces.

Please check out our website's beautiful new home page.  If you'd like to see more design tips and tricks in addition to this monthly newsletter, please LIKE us on FACEBOOK.   I frequently post interesting and informative tips and information.  Or subscribe to my design BLOG.  Until next time. . .

Warmly,

Using Mirrors to Lighten and Brighten Your Home
Mirrors reflect light into a space to brighten and enliven the decor.  Nothing makes a room look larger than adding a mirror.  But be careful where you place them.  A mirror may be placed in an area where it can be used to see your reflection.  It may also be used to add drama, light, and beauty.

Burr Entry

One of my favorite areas to place a mirror is in an entry.  It will reflect light and create a welcoming feeling.  Placed above a console table or chest, a beautiful framed mirror will set the tone for your home and create a focal point.

Pagana Squares

In small rooms mirrors offer an inexpensive way to give the illusion of space.  Place mirrors on a wall opposite a window wall and see how the view is multiplied throughout the rest of the space.  Small, decorative mirrors in groupings work well to give the illusion of space when a functional mirror isn't needed.  Use them on side walls of long hallways.  They will distract the eye and brighten up dark areas.

Joel Oval Mirror

In the bathroom obviously a mirror over the sink is considered essential, but try to think outside the box and use a statement-making mirror.  There are lots of beautiful framed mirrors that will add personality to your powder room, guest bath or master bath.

Eco-Friendly Design Trends for Fall 2011

While at the Las Vegas World Market Center last week, it was obvious that eco-friendly design is a trend in interior design that is only getting stronger.  With 5 million square feet of showroom space, there was so much to see and explore.   In almost every showroom I saw examples of eco-friendly design, also referred to as sustainable, green, environmental, and recycled design.  It's clear that manufacturers are attempting to leave a smaller environmental footprint by using recycled materials.  The trend is toward more natural materials that are made from reclaimed woods, recycled metals, and even recycled fabrics.

I saw lots of furniture made from reclaimed woods.  These are woods that were previously used for other purposes.  The woods have a rustic, weathered look, which has become very popular.  Many of the manufacturers who don't use reclaimed woods are creating furniture that has the same rustic look and finish.

Reclaimed wood table

This reclaimed wood table is one example of the many I saw.  Note the grayed, rustic look of the wood.  This finish creates a warm, inviting feeling, as if the table has been in your family for generations.  The wicker chairs are also made from natural materials.  Read More
Before & After Photos

I love sharing "before and after" photos. It's so much fun to see the changes in a room. I love seeing the reaction of my clients when we complete a project, but seeing the actual before and after photos is incredible. You can see a slideshow of "before & after's" on my website under Portfolio, but I'd like to showcase one in this newsletter each month where I'll comment on the project.

Bushman kitchen - before Bushman kitchen - after

'Before'

'After'

This is the kitchen of Santa Clarita's very own wine connoisseur, Eve Bushman, and her husband Eddie.  They have a very large, well laid-out kitchen, and their cabinet interiors and drawers were in fairly good condition.  What dated this kitchen were the oak cabinets, the tile countertops, the older appliances, and the fluorescent lighting.  Because my clients didn't want to replace their cabinets and were happy with the layout, we refaced the island and the face frames and added new maple doors.  The doors are Shaker style, giving a clean, modern look to their kitchen.  They opted for large, brushed nickel pulls, stainless steel appliances, and a beautiful Mascarato granite that has lots of movement and gorgeous shades of green, beige, and rust.  The fluorescent fixture was removed, the ceiling was drywalled, and we added four decorative pendant lights over the island and recessed cans throughout the kitchen.  Different areas are on different switches, and all are on dimmers, allowing for a multitude of lighting mood options.  The new under cabinet lighting casts beautiful shadows on the new stacked stone backsplash. The barstools were reupholstered in a textured suede that blends beautifully with the maple wood.  This newly designed kitchen lends itself well to Eve and Eddie's many wine tastings.

You can see more photos of this and other kitchens in the portfolio section of my website.  If you'd like some help transforming a room in your home, just call or email me.  I'd love to help you.
