How to Fill Your Home with Light and Personality
In a past issue I talked about the importance of properly lighting your rooms.  No matter what the style or the purpose of a room, one of the most important elements of its design is the lighting.  This month I'd like to talk about how designers use lamps to add drama and style.  I like to think of lamps as the jewelry of your room.  In addition to light, they can character, beauty, personality, and drama.

When selecting lamps, keep in mind the amount of light you will need in the room.  Select several lamps to be placed strategically around the room to allow for the light to be balanced.  Table, floor, and buffet lamps cast a warm, inviting glow, allowing for conversation and adding great atmosphere.   Buffet lamps are usually tall and slender, and particularly attractive in pairs, often used together on a console table, dresser, or buffet.

Torchieres are a more dramatic source of light, with a shade that directs light upward, throwing light up to bounce off the ceiling and wall.  Torchieres create a glow of fairly even illumination, and are great for adding drama to a room.

Each of these types of lamps are available in a wide range of styles to fit in any environment or room in a home, whether contemporary, transitional, traditional, rustic, tuscan, whimsical, or any exciting mix that expands and enhances the personal feel of the home.

When selecting lamps for a room, choose styles that work well together, but that don't necessarily match.  For example, it's tempting to use identical lamps on either side of a sofa, but this is something that I never do.  It's much more interesting to use different lamps that are similar in scale, but unique in their own personality.  In addition to scale,  the lamps should relate to each other through design, color, or materials.  For example, think about using several unique lamps that have the same or similar colored shades.  Or unique lamps that have the same colors in them.

Your home will feel much warmer and more inviting with the inclusion of lamps that complement each other.  Lamps can become the determining factor in how much a room is enjoyed, how functional it is, and in many cases, how beautiful it can be.

You can now find designer lamps just like the ones that I use with my own clients.  Please visit Innovations Designer Home Decor and browse through our large selection of unique and beautiful lamps.  I've even recommended lamps that work well together to make it easier for you to choose.  I've personally selected each lamp, and I've written a designer note with my comments about each one.  I hope you enjoy our  online boutique and that you're able to find just the right lamps to fill your home with light and warmth.

Brighten Up Your Home for Spring!
With spring in the air it's time to lighten and brighten your home.  A good way to start is to give your home a good airing out.  Open up all of your windows and doors and let the fresh air in.  It feels great to smell the clean, fresh air and feel a warm breeze.

Flowers are blooming outside, so bring some inside.  If you've got flowers growing in your garden, cut some, fill some vases, and place them throughout your home for beautiful springtime color.  If you don't have enough flowers in your garden, try the local farmers' markets.  They have beautiful, fresh flowers at great prices.  Get some daffodils, tulips, or gerbera daisies.

It's a good time to de-clutter.  Get rid of old papers and files that are no longer needed.  Throw away old magazines.  Take a look around your home and get rid of anything that no longer holds personal meaning to you.  You don't need to throw it away.  Donate items in good condition to a local charity.

Replace worn throw pillows with new ones in bright spring colors.  Replace old artwork with some new pieces with beautiful colors that you enjoy looking at.   Get some new lamps.  There are some attractive lamps in bright colors that will add personality to your rooms.  Put away your pine and pumpkin scented candles and replace them with some floral scented candles like lilac or lavender.

Before & After Photos

I love sharing "before and after" photos. It's so much fun to see the changes in a room. I love seeing the reaction of my clients when we complete a project, but seeing the actual before and after photos is incredible. You can see a slideshow of "before & after's" on my website under Portfolio, but I'd like to showcase one in this newsletter each month where I'll comment on the project.

I really enjoyed working with this client on the transformation of her family room.  The client wanted a warm, comfortable, and inviting home.  Since this client does a lot of entertaining, having adequate seating was important.  With a TV in this room (not visible in photos), seating for TV viewing was also important.  Color was one of the most important aspects of the new design.  We brought in color in the furniture, throw pillows, artwork, valances, area rug, and florals.  We kept an accent table with carvings of elephants that was sentimental to the client.  This table worked beautifully in the new design.  The dark woods on the coffee table and other occasional tables complement the finish of the carved table.  Three unique lamps were used which add adequate lighting and balance the light in the room, while adding personality and drama.  The room is now bright and airy, warm and inviting, and fully functional for entertaining or just kicking back to watch TV.
