Designer Secrets to Accessorizing Your Home
So you have some furniture - maybe a sofa, a loveseat, some end tables, and a coffee table.  But the room lacks personality.  What do you do now?  Think of your room as an outfit.  An outfit needs accessories like jewelry, shoes, scarves or belts to complete the look.  Don't you love it when you see a woman who really knows how to put an outfit together? Well, you can do the same with your home.

The key is to add layers.  The most beautiful designs consist of layers of color and texture.  Find a piece of artwork or an area rug that really speaks to you.  Use that piece as inspiration for the rest of the room.  Add complementary art pieces that fill your walls with color and texture.  Lamps can add so much personality while adding a glow and being functional, too.  There are so many unique and beautiful lamps.  Think of them as the jewelry in your room.  Every end table should have a lamp on it, and where there is no table, use a floor lamp to balance the light.  And they don't have to match!  Most of the design that I do is Eclectic, which encompasses a variety of periods and styles, and is brought together through the use of color, texture, shape, and finish.

Greenery and flowers add another layer and help to bring the outdoors inside.  If you don't have a green thumb, think silk or preserved plants. Preserved plants are real plants that have been preserved through a special process so that they won't deteriorate.  They look, feel, and smell like real plants because they are real!  We'll be adding a wonderful line of preserved plants to our Innovations Designer Home Decor shopping boutique very soon.

Add another layer by putting some throw pillows on your seating.  Choose colors and textures that complement the artwork or area rug that you've selected.  Make sure that the pillows are large and fluffy.

Get some decorative photo frames, add some favorite family photos, and place them in a grouping of three or five.  Don't overdo it.  If you'd like to display more family photos, rotate them from time to time or get a digital photo frame.

Other types of accessories that you may include are candleholders (great for mood lighting), decorative boxes (great for holding remotes), trays (great for serving), and bookends (great for holding a few special books on a console or sofa table).

Notice in the photo below the use of throw pillows, lighting, plants, artwork, and other accessories.  They all create layers that add a richness to the room and a balanced feeling.

Be creative, and make your selections based on what you love, always including pieces that are meaningful to you.  If you need help, please visit our online home accessories boutique.  I've personally selected the most amazing, unique, and beautiful pieces.  I've included a personal note for each piece, and there are complementary pieces recommended to help you put a design together.  Good luck, and please let me know how you do.  I'd love to include your 'before' and 'after' photos in my blog.

If you need additional assistance, remember, I'm here to help.  Tell me about the project you have in mind and let's talk about it.  Maybe a brief consultation is all you need to get you started, or I can create a design master plan that incorporates your passions and personal taste.
Get Inspired!
A few weeks ago I went to the Las Vegas Furniture & Home Accessories Market to see what's new and exciting in home decor and to get some inspiration for the interior designs for my newest clients.  I saw lots of color - brighter and deeper colors are everywhere.  You'll see these deep, bright colors in fashion as well.  Here are a couple of new pieces that I love, and that were recently added to our new Innovations Designer Home Decor shopping site.   I've selected over 250 new pieces, including artwork, plants & florals, lamps, trays, candleholders, photo frames, and accent furniture.  Please take a look and get inspired to update your home with some color.

Before & After Photos

I love sharing "before and after" photos. It's so much fun to see the changes in a room. I love seeing the reaction of my clients when we complete a project, but seeing the actual before and after photos is incredible. You can see a slideshow of "before & after's" on my website under Portfolio, but I'd like to showcase one in this newsletter each month where I'll comment on the project.

'After'

This is the dining room of a young family in Santa Clarita. I completely re-designed their entry, living room, and family room, but they decided to keep their dining room table & chairs, china cabinet, and chandelier. We changed the paint color which immediately warmed up the room. I was intrigued with the niches on either side of the china cabinet. They had very small accessory pieces in them which got completely lost. I had direct lighting installed in the niches and then selected some beautiful, large contemporary sculptures. What a difference just that change made!

I added shades to the chandelier which immediately gave it a warmer, more updated look. I completed the room with florals, plants, and candlesticks. The draperies were changed, and I added artwork on the stairway. My clients added beautiful dishes to the china cabinet which helped to create a focal point and brighten the room. The dining room is now an inviting, warm place to gather with family and friends. You can see more photos of this home and other 'before & afters' in the portfolio section of my website.
