Greetings!
Welcome! In this and upcoming issues I'll be sharing lots of helpful and interesting information to help you create the place you love coming home to.
In case you noticed that there was no issue in October, it's because I was in Italy for 3 weeks and just didn't get a chance to send it out. My experience in Italy was amazing, and I share some of my experiences in this issue. If you'd like to read all of my posts on Italy you can find them at www.InnovationsID.com/blog. Hope you enjoy reading and seeing my photos of this incredibly beautiful country.
I hope that you enjoy this issue and that you'll become a regular reader. If you're not a subscriber, please click on "Join Our Mailing List" under quick links so that you won't miss our next issue.

| Common Interior Design Mistakes & How to Avoid Them |
Beginning in June I began a series of the most common design mistakes that I've encountered. I've been an interior designer for twenty-four years, and in that time I've seen people make the same mistakes over and over when designing the interior of their homes. I'd like to share the most common mistakes with you and give you some tips on how to avoid making them in your own home. We'll cover a different mistake in each issue.Mistake #5 - Not Fluffing Up Your Sofa Cushions I can't tell you how many times I walk into someone's home and their sofa and chair cushions look like they've never been turned or fluffed up. The sofa looks worn and tired, just because it needs a little TLC. If I go to one of my client's homes and see this sorry state of affairs, I ask them if I can do a little punching. It's great for getting out your frustrations.
If your furniture needs some TLC, here's what to do. Start by removing all throw pillows, seat, and back cushions from the furniture. Do one piece of furniture at a time. Keep track of where the cushions had been on the piece and flip them over as you remove them. Take the seat cushions that have been flipped over, and if there is more than one the same size, rotate them so that the same cushion isn't getting all of the wear. If you haven't flipped your cushions in a while (or ever!), then the seam on the front of the cushion has probably moved down. Once you flip the cushion over, the seam will need to move down, so try to grab a little of the fabric and gently move it down so that the front seam is in the middle of the cushion where it belongs. Now scrunch the cushion and beat it a little to try to get it to fluff up to its original volume. This is especially effective when you have down blend cushions. Put the seat cushions back on the piece of furniture and smooth the fabric and adjust the cushions so that they look uniform.
Now take the back cushions and do the same thing. Back cushions can be smashed and beaten (gently, of course), even more than seat cushions. Rotate them if possible and place them against the back of the piece. Smooth them out so that they also look uniform.
The final step is to take your throw pillows, flip them, rotate them, and give them a good fluff and beating. Finish by putting a karate chop right in the top center. Your furniture piece should now look fresh and neat. If your cushions still look sad, you may need to replace the inserts. Any good upholsterer can do this for you. If the fabric is looking worn, too, it may be time to reupholster or replace that piece of furniture. We'd be happy to help you to select some new furniture and maybe give that room a little freshening up. Just click here and tell us how we can help.
Here's a photo of some well maintained cushions. Keeping your cushions turned and fluffed will not only make them look better, but will also extend their life, thereby saving you money.

Almost everyone suffers from the "non fluffing syndrome", so don't feel like you're the only one with neglected cushions. Get your frustrations out on your cushions and email me some 'before' & 'after' photos. I'll post them on my blog. Now have some fun!

Italy - Land of Art, Architecture, Wine, and Gelato!
| In late September I traveled to Italy with my husband. It was a long-awaited vacation for us, but for me it was also the culmination of a dream that I've had since I studied interior design at UCLA 24 years ago. At that time I studied about all of the amazing art and architecture in Italy and vowed to myself that someday I would see it for myself. Well, my dream came true, and while in Italy I soaked in all of the architecture, sculpture, and art about which I had studied. That, combined with the gorgeous scenery, incredible wines, and yummy gelato, made it the trip of a lifetime. I've written seven blog posts about my experiences in this beautiful country. Here is the final post on Rome. If you'd like to read the others, just click here.
We arrived in Rome in the late afternoon by train from Sorrento. Our hotel was in the heart of Rome, in the piazza that faces the Pantheon. This beautiful old piazza is filled with people all hours of the day, and in the early evenings it's alive with talented musicians. All this facing the incredible Pantheon, which, built in 125 A.D., had Europe's largest dome until the Renaissance. Both Brunelleschi and Michelangelo took inspiration from the Pantheon's dome when they designed the domes for the Duomo in Florence and St. Peter's in the Vatican, both of which I got to see. This was the view from our hotel room.
I fell in love with Rome. It's a beautiful city, full of life, delicious food, and incredible architecture. Our first night there we walked to the Trevi Fountain. I'm sure you've seen it in the movies, but what a treat to be standing in front of it. Of course we threw coins over our left shoulders into the water as is the custom with the hope that we will someday return. It's an absolutely gorgeous fountain.

| Before & After Photos |
I love sharing 'before and after' photos. It's so much fun to see the changes in a room. I love seeing the reaction of my clients when we complete a project, but seeing the actual 'before and after' photos sometimes even amazes me. You can see a slideshow of 'before & after's' on my website under Portfolio, but I'd like to showcase one in this newsletter each month where I'll comment on the project.
In the photos below you can see the transformation of the living room of one of my clients in Westridge. I love re-designing rooms that are basically all white, with little warmth or personality. It's like starting with a blank canvas and injecting the client's own tastes and personality. We changed the wall and ceiling color to a warm, soft neutral. Just that change alone added a warm glow to this previously cold room. New seating, tables, lamps, draperies, area rug, and plants created a comfortable, inviting seating area. We were able to re-use the client's coffee table and their artwork, thereby lowering their cost and including something that was meaningful to them.

You can see more 'Before & After' photos in my online porfolio. If you have a room in need of some transformation, please let us know.
