Tree-mendous Volunteer Leads Upcoming Green Walk |
Phyllis Reynolds giving a tree walk at Laurelhurst Park. Courtesy of Angie DiSalvo |
Discover old and significant trees in the Portland Heights neighborhood on Saturday, September 18th at 10 a.m.with Phyllis Reynolds.
Phyllis Reynolds is author of the ultimate book about Portland's trees - Trees of Greater Portland. She has also served on the Urban Forestry Commission and is an expert taxonomist. We are very grateful to have her share her knowledge and passion for trees.
Phyllis will begin her tour at Portland Heights Park located just uphill from Stroeheckers Grocery at 2855 SW Patton Road. Meet at the parking lot of the park which is located across from Old Orchard Road and SW Patton. There is no pre-registration for this free walk. See a number of 100 foot or taller trees - giant sequoia, garry oak, cedar of Lebanon, and more. These trees were saved from developments due to their size and placement in the neighborhood. This leisurely walk will last approximately 1.5 hours and is appropriate for adults and families.

| Help Inventory Street Trees September 11 and October 9 |

Tree Stewards are needed to identify trees and record size, health, and site characteristics during two street tree inventory work days. The inventory work days are an excellent opportunity to practice and improve tree identification skills and to teach other volunteers about tree issues. Please consider helping us September 11 and October 9 from 8:30 am to noon - your experience is much needed. The Concordia Tree Team is hosting the inventory work days as part of their project to create a Neighborhood Stewardship Plan. The process begins by gathering volunteers to help conduct a street tree inventory. Volunteers are guided by Urban Forestry staff, who provide training, tools, and event organization. Together, information is collected on tree species, size, health, site conditions, and available planting spaces. Data is analyzed by Urban Forestry staff, and findings are presented to neighborhood stakeholders. Achievable strategies are set by the collective body to improve existing trees, identify opportunities for an expanding tree canopy, and connect the neighborhood with city and non-profit resources. The result is a Neighborhood Stewardship Plan. The plan identifies the current status and health of neighborhood street trees and provides recommendations for neighborhood action. This final product serves as a catalyst for neighborhood implementation. Registration for the Saturday inventory days: September 11: Click Here October 9: Click Here
This project is supported by a grant from the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District. If you are interested in conducting such a project in your neighborhood, please contact Angie DiSalvo (angie.disalvo@portlandoregon.gov) for details on how to participate. More detailed information on the program can be found at: www.portlandonline.com/parks/treeinventory
