Urban Trees are an invaluable resource, they beautify the cityscape, improve neighborhood safety and livability, provide vital and quantifiable ecosystem services, such as air purification , temperature mitigation, and stormwater interception.  Since 1997 Portland Neighborhood Tree Stewards have been helping to grow, maintain, and build support for our urban forest.  Some of the accomplishments of our tree stewards include: educational tree plantings, tree establishment, street tree pruning "Social Club," tree identifications walks, neighborhood street tree inventories, school plantings "Learning Landscapes," and tabling at events throughout the city.

Thank you to Jalene Braun of the Lents neighborhood.  Jalene is a 2009 Neighborhood Tree Steward graduate.  When she is not working at SOLV she is volunteering her time to make the Lents neighborhood a wonderful place to live.  Jalene is the vice chair of the Lents Neighborhood Association and has worked to create the Green Lents Initiative, a program to help Lents become a more sustainable neighborhood.  Recently, Jalene and the Lents Neighborhood Association held the 2nd Annual Ramona Street Fair.  The fair was a great success and a lot of fun.  To read the the Oregonian article  Lents' Ramona Street Fair brings community together for second year, Click Here!  Thanks Jalene, for all your hard work.

Tree Stewards Needed to Help Inventory Street Trees

Street Tree Inventory

Walking around your neighborhood, do you see tree-deficient areas, trees in need of maintenance, and neighbors who are concerned but don't know where to begin? A tree inventory can provide a starting place to better understand your neighborhood's tree species, stocking level, health, and available planting spaces.

Urban Forestry is embarking on a new project to help neighborhoods take action to improve their trees. Active community groups interested in the cause begin by gathering volunteers to help conduct a street tree inventory. Volunteers are guided by Urban Forestry staff, who provide training, tools, and event organization. Together, information is collected on tree species, size, health, site conditions, and available planting spaces. Data is analyzed by Urban Forestry staff, and findings are presented to neighborhood stakeholders. Achievable strategies are set by the collective body to improve existing trees, identify opportunities for an expanding tree canopy, and connect the neighborhood with city and non-profit resources. The result is a Neighborhood Stewardship Plan. The plan identifies the current status and health of neighborhood street trees and provides recommendations for neighborhood action. This final product serves as a catalyst for neighborhood implementation.

Concordia  will be the first test neighborhood for conducting a street tree inventory and creating a Neighborhood Stewardship Plan. The Concordia Tree Team will host three street tree inventory workshops on August 21, September 11, and October 9 from 8:30 am to noon. Tree Stewards are needed to identify trees and record size, health, and site characteristics. The inventory work days are an excellent opportunity to practice and improve tree identification skills and to teach other volunteers about tree issues. Please consider helping us on one or more inventory days - your experience is much needed.

Now Accepting Bill Naito Community Trees Award Nominations

Bill Naito

The Urban Forestry Commission created this annual award in honor of the builder and community leader who did so much to beautify Portland with trees. Bill Naito rarely missed an Urban Forestry Commission meeting, which he founded in 1974 and chaired until his death. No one in Portland had been more tenacious than Bill at encouraging the planting of trees. Through his humor, persistence, and imaginative approach to projects, he inspired many individuals to recognize the beauty trees bring to our city. The Bill Naito Community Trees Award is presented to individuals, organizations or projects that have continued Bill's work and reflect his dedication.  We encourage you to nominate a person or a group who has made a significant contribution to Portland's Urban Forest.  Nominations are being accepted now and are due Wednesday, September 1st.  For more information  and application forms please visit www.portlandonline.com/parks/.
