Gunn Park to hold activities for 4th of July weekend
An event that has taken place each 4th of July at Gunn Park since 1994 will no longer be called Freedom Fest after the dissolution of the Gunn Park Event Committee, a local group of volunteers who had organized each event and other special community events at Gunn Park up until 2009. This year, the Fort Scott Recreation Commission will sponsor three events on Saturday that were traditionally part of Freedom Fest.
FSRC directorTom Robertson, also a former member of the Gunn Park Even Committee, said the three main events that will take place this weekend were the most popular events of Freedom Fest, which is why the FSRC wanted to make sure those events were available to the public again this summer.
All events take place on Saturday, July 3, 2010.
Those events include:
6-on-6 mud volleyball tournament that begins at 9 a.m.
6th Annual 5K Sam's Walk or Run which begins at 8 a.m. at Shelter House No. 3 in Gunn Park
Youth fishing derby starting at 9 a.m.
For more information and any of the Independence Day Events, contact the FSRC at (620) 223-0386. |

Fort Scott National Historic Site Offers Three Days of Activities in Celebration of Our Nation's Independence
Volunteers and staff of Fort Scott National Historic Site invite you to come and join in celebration of our nation's independence for an Old Fashioned Military Holiday. Cannon firing at dusk, patriotic music, children's game, and free ice cream are just a few of the activities offered Friday through Sunday, July 2-4.
On Friday, July 2, a special evening cannon firing will highlight the power of artillery in the American army of the 1840s. In November of 1845, Fort Scott received a shipment of two artillery pieces but no artillerymen to fire the guns. Learn more about who fired these guns and witness the power of cannons during a ceremonial firing at dusk.
Come and visit with people of the garrison as living history will be featured this holiday weekend. Test your skills as you take part in the fun of competing in historic games Saturday, July 3. Black powder smoke will be in the air throughout the weekend as historic weapons programs will pay honor to our freedom.
Sunday afternoon, bring your blanket to picnic on the parade ground and enjoy an outdoor concert provided by the Blue and Gray Brass Brigade Band beginning at 1:30 p.m. Individual and family box lunches are available from the Friends for Fort Scott NHS, Inc. by advance order. Lunch tickets are available at Country Cupboard, Life + Style, and the Chamber of Commerce office. At 2:15 p.m., the band will take an intermission break and join us in a cup of free ice cream as Ranger Robert Thomas provides a stirring patriotic speech followed by a 30-gun salute honoring the 30 states in the Union in 1848.

Student Designed Quilts Currently on Tour of Kansas National Park Sites

From June 26 - July 7, 2010, six quilts designed by elementary students throughout the state of Kansas will be on display at Fort Scott National Historic Site. Included in this exhibit is a quilt designed by 4th graders from Eugene Ware Elementary School and assembled by the Busy Bees, a local quilting group. Visitors are encouraged to come and see the exhibit and vote for their favorite quilt. The project was collaboration between all five National Park Service units in Kansas, local elementary schools and quilting guilds within each park community and was funded in part by a Naional Park Foundation grant. Students learned about untold stories at the nattional park area in their communities through workshops and site visits. Each student then designed and fabricated a 12 inch quilt block to represent those stories with the assistance of local quiolt guilds and park rangers. Local quilds then assembled the blocks and helped the students tie the quilts together. The quilts are currenntly touring the fiive National Park Service sites of Kansas for the summer as part of a traveling exhibit entitled: "Building Common Groung through the Quilts of Many Hands." At each National Park Service site, visitors will be able to view the six quilts and read the student essays. Visitors will then be able to vote for their favorite quilt. The quilt receiving the most votes will be awarded a grand prize and honored with a formal presentation at the winning school in September. For more information call 620-223-0550 or visit the Fort's website at www.nps.gov/fosc. |
