Kenya ICT Board  proposes to host 'Marketing Kenya' event in Bellagio, Italy
Part of Kenya ICT Board's mandate is to market Kenya as an ICT destination. As such, the Kenya ICT Board intends to organize  an international conference in Bellagio , Italy to introduce the country as an ICT destination to a wide range of select international ICT leaders.

The conference is designed to position Kenya on the global map by presenting its value proposition to the global commercial sector. Accenture is the implementation partner and is currently assisting the Kenya ICT Board to complete the proposals to Rockerfeller foundation.

Objectives of the event are:

  • Showcase the BPO value proposition into real terms by seeing where as a country we can improve and where we are doing well.
  • Change in perception of the country-Kenya and its nascent BPO&O sector, leading to potential investments for both the supply and demand side, with the view of creating the much needed jobs and opportunities for entrepreneurs.
  • Support the Board in its mandate to market and position the country as a BPO destination.

The proposed conference theme is "Doing good and doing well in emerging markets".
PASHA - Digital Inclusion Project: over 1,000 entrepreneurs trained
Pasha: Digital Inclusion
Over the last two years, the Kenya ICT Board, Cisco and Telkom Kenya have successfully piloted five digital villages in Kangundo, Garissa, Meru, Mukuru and Malindi. These pilot sites will inform the development of the larger digital village initiative which is expected to touch on every constituency in Kenya. Over a similar period, 1,041 entrepreneurs have been trained in the first phase. The training covered the following areas:
  • Entrepreneurship Essentials
  • Business Creation
  • Legal Frameworks
  • Business Management
  • Business Planning
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Quality and Research
  • Record Keeping
  • Financing
The second phase will commence in May and will target an additional 1,500 entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, the Kenya ICT Board has engaged a consulting firm, Intelecon Research and Consulting, to assist in development of  guidelines for the digital village's revolving fund. The consultants were engaged in February 2010 and have been meeting with  local stakeholders; in particular, banks, micro-finance institutions, information technology vendors, telecommunication operators, sector regulators and other Government agencies. The comprehensive stakeholder engagement will give the consultants a clear view of the local financial and technological environment.

The firm will review and provide guidance and solutions regarding all the strategies and plans for the digital villages and assist in assessment of grant proposals and Monitoring and Evaluation reporting.

Over the consultancy period, the Kenya ICT Board expects to establish at least 30 digital villages.

In addition, the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development will set up 15 digital villages/PASHA centers in partnership with the Kenya ICT Board and the local town and county councils. Machakos is the site of the first PASHA.

Status of ICT In Kenya: Monitoring and Evaluation Survey
The Kenya ICT Board is in the process of requesting for bids for a 'Status of ICT in Kenya' survey. This survey will assist the government and the ICT industry to make informed decisions on all matters pertaining to investment, addressing gaps in the market, strategy formulation and monitoring and evaluation.

Additionally, the data from this report will be crucial in promoting the country as an ICT destination and lobbying for long term support from the donor community and multi-national investors.

Current company files at the Kenya Company Registry.
Company files at the Kenya Company Registry
One of the objectives of the Kenya ICT Board is to assist the government adopt e-government projects. This is with a view of the government achieving higher levels of efficiency and service to citizens at a lower cost.

The company registry has been identified as an anchor project for the implementation of digitization and automation due to its important role in creating a conducive business environment for commerce and business in Kenya.

The Registry is currently in the process of  digitizing its documents into a newly installed electronic document management systems (EDMS) and business process workflow for the registration of Business Names and Limited Companies.

The final installment consists of scanning of records and procurement of servers. The systems will have a central server hosting all Company Registry information within the Republic of Kenya in electronic format. Ultimately the relevant records will be in a searchable database. The main objective is to enable the Company Registry offices to efficiently handle over 1,000,000 company files and have these files in a searchable records database.

The project will launch in mid-2010 and will be presided over by the Secretary General , Kenya ICT Board CEO and other dignitaries.

What is: Twitter?
In this section of our newsletter we aim to shed light (chanoka) on some facet of ICT from online social media to BPO, e-commerce to IT procurement -- in just 5 points. This month: what is Twitter?

1. Twitter is a social networking service that allows people to share messages called 'tweets'. Tweets can be no longer than 140 characters, people tweeting on twitter are called tweeps or tweeple.
--
2. You can tweet from your phone or use one of many applications available to enhance your twitting experience. Try Tweetdeck for your desktop, twitter gadget for your iGoogle page or gmail and Twitter counter for your blog or website.
--
3. Twitter is great for sharing links to website be it your own  blog or website or interesting news and articles. To save on character space (remember you only have 140) 'shrink' your link with one of these easy to use services: bit.ly, tinyurl.com or ow.ly
--
4. Create a conversation around a specific topic by hash-tagging a keyword, for example #onlyinkenya is an ongoing topic on things that tweeps feel only happens in kenya.
--
5. What are people saying about your service or your company on twitter? A good reason for you to be on twitter is to connected with your consumer, clients and/or audience. Its true that there are not as many tweeps as facebookers, but it may be worth keeping an eye on twitter. Have a look at how Kenya Airways and Capital FM use twitter.
