American Legion To DoD:

Don't Increase TRICARE Fees

DoD

WASHINGTON (Feb. 10, 2011) - With the Department of Defense on the verge of increasing fees for its TRICARE insurance program, the nation's largest veterans service organization remains strongly opposed to any new out-of-pocket health-care costs for those who use the program.

"We have opposed such increases for several years, and are proud of the fact that TRICARE fees have never been raised in the 15-year history of the program," said Jimmie Foster, national commander of The American Legion. "We are well aware that DoD needs to reduce its budget, but they need to look elsewhere and leave TRICARE alone."

American Legion Opposes Proposal To Cut VA Spending

Fund Cut

WASHINGTON (Jan. 28, 2011) - Responding to a proposal by Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota to freeze VA health-care spending and cut veterans disability payments to help reduce federal spending, American Legion national commander Jimmie L. Foster said his organization steadfastly opposes the initiative.

"It is absurd to suggest such a thing when we are fighting two wars and creating more veterans every day who have served their country honorably and have already earned their benefits," said Jimmie Foster, national commander of The American Legion, the country's largest veterans service organization.

The plan, which proposes to cut a total of $400 billion in federal spending, is derived from an Oct. 28 report from the Heritage Foundation that projects $2.5 billion in savings from a freeze on VA health-care spending increases, and $1.9 billion in savings from scrapping disability payments for veterans already receiving Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) .

American Legion Thanks Bachmann

For Withdrawing VA-cuts Proposal

National Commander Foster

WASHINGTON (Feb. 10, 2011) - The American Legion is expressing its thanks to Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., for withdrawing her proposal to cut $4.5 billion in VA spending and veterans health benefits. Her decision came one week after the Legion and other veterans service organizations protested the recommendation.

Bachmann told The American Legion she heard from many of its members after she proposed

the VA cuts last month. "Their comments played a key role in my decision to remove that ($4.5 billion) item from the discussion, and I'm grateful for their input."

"Rep. Bachmann has done what our elected representatives should do in situations like this," American Legion National Commander Jimmie Foster said. "She listened to her constituents, to veterans, and acted according to their interests.

American Legion Renews Fight For Veterans

'Penalized For Their Wounds'

Soldier

WASHINGTON (Feb. 4, 2011) - The American Legion is calling for swift congressional action on pending  legislation that would eliminate the practice of concurrent receipt, often referred to as the "disabled veterans tax."

Currently, retired veterans who are compensated for service-connected injuries are getting equivalent amounts of their disability pay deducted from their retirement pay.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

The people rarely benefit from modern-day revolutions. Typically, the people who mass in the streets to protest are the pawns of back-room power brokers who are scheming to grab power for themselves.

Mao, Che, Fidel and the Ayatollah Khomeini all used the people to consolidate their power and

to gain prestige and personal wealth. And, they did it at the expense of the people.

Today, we are seeing social unrest in many third-world nations. Surely, the people in these countries have legitimate concerns and are worried about where their next meal is coming from. These people are on the edge of despair and have long-ago lost hope that their children will have a brighter future. Their minds are ripe for harvest by religious and political radicals.
