National POW/MIA Recognition Day

POW MIA FlagObservances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans' facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families' POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

As part of National POW-MIA Day, Mayor Buddy Dyer and his Veterans Advisory Council hosted an official POW-MIA ceremony to honor United States Military prisoners of war and those still missing in action.

The event featured patriotic music by the VFW Post 2093 Band as well as the Presentation of Colors by the American Legion Post 331. Special guest speakers included United States Senator George LeMieux as well as Admiral Gene Kendall.

The American Legion's Job Fairs for Veterans Competes For $250K Pepsi Refresh Everything Grant & Your Vote Is Needed!

The American Legion is demonstrating its commitment to helping military veterans find jobs by entering its career fairs in this month's Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. If the effort is successful, The American Legion will be awarded a $250,000 grant to sponsor events across the country in which employers are paired with veterans looking for work.

"The unemployment rate among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans exceeds 14 percent. This is a national disgrace!" said American Legion Nation Commander Clarence E. Hill. "Every veteran vowed to defend America and protect our way of life. The least we can do is to allow them an opportunity to support their families and contribute to America's workforce. Hiring veterans isn't just the right thing to do, but it is smart business! These talented men and women offer unique skills, discipline and a proven work ethic that would benefit any employer smart enough to hire them. Additionally, job fairs sponsored by The American Legion include Small Business Development Workshops so veterans can pursue the American dream."

Pelosi Says Infrastructure Overhaul Can Put Veterans To Work
The American Legion National Press Release

Pelosi
MILWAUKEE
(Sept. 1, 2010)

In a wide-ranging speech Wednesday that focused on recent bipartisan Capitol Hill accomplishments for veterans, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., summoned the spirit of a  past Republican president and five-star Army general to offer hope for the nation's unemployment problem.

She drew on Dwight D. Eisenhower's vision in the 1950s about how massive public-works projects, despite their high federal cost, were the building blocks of economic growth and national security.

"These were very difficult economic times," Pelosi told thousands of veterans gathered in Milwaukee for the 92nd American Legion National Convention. "And in spite of that bad economy, he made the decision to build the Interstate Highway System. But where would the money come from? You'd hear this all the time. The president said we are going forward because it is a national-security issue to have the American people connected by an Interstate Highway System. Not only that, it created an enormous amount of jobs. Just think where the country would be if it had not invested in that infrastructure at that time. It was a very courageous move by a very courageous president."

Saving Mohammed

MILWAUKEE
(Aug. 31, 2010)

A Michigan Army National Guard officer today received the prestigious Patriot Award from the nation's largest veterans service organization for his personal efforts in giving hope, and getting medical treatment, for a 13-year old Iraqi boy.

Major David A. Howell, a physician's assistant, was on a mission with his unit to protect a gathering of Iraqi women and children last November in Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, when he first saw Mohammed.  The women, widows of Iraqi policemen, were collecting government support.  His father was killed three years earlier by insurgents because he was an interpreter for American military forces.

His mother took off his cap and exposed Mohammed's badly disfigured head from a house fire when he was a young child.

"Will you save me?" the boy, then 11, said to Maj. Howell.

Impassioned Congressman Steve Buyer Fires Parting Shots At Washington Colleagues
The American Legion National Press Release

Congressman Steve BuyerMILWAUKEE
(Sept 1, 2010)

In what, he says, may be his last public speaking appearance before retirement from Congress, Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.) used the American Legion convention in Milwaukee Wednesday as a platform for criticism of what he characterized as a partisan, hypocritical and misguided Congress.

The nine-term Congress-man and Army veteran opened his address with nostalgic tales of a boyhood in and around his father and uncle's American Legion post in Monticello, Indiana, of which Buyer is a life member today.  His talk soon turned to business, however, as he contrasted a previous generation of lawmakers with those serving today,

"If God had given me the ability to choose my years of service to the nation in Congress," Buyer said, "I would have chosen 1948 to 1964, because the individuals who served in Congress at that time...had served the nation in World War II and Korea. They understood the American character. They understood the character that was forged in the crucibles of very difficult times...to go to foreign lands, to go to places they had never been and fight for people they had never met and to leave freedom in their footsteps."

Times Square Vendors Given Patriot Awards by The American Legion

Time Square Vendors
MILWAUKEE
(Aug. 31, 2010)

For potentially saving the lives of thousands of innocent people, two Times Square businessmen, Vietnam veterans and Legionnaires, were given The American Legion's prestigious Patriot Award today during the opening session of the organization's 92nd National Convention here today.

Duane Jackson, an Army veteran and Lance Orton, Sr., a Navy veteran, almost simultaneously, spotted a dark-colored SUV Nissan Pathfinder in a No Standing zone on May 1.

"Smoke started coming out of it, then the pops began - five or six of them," Jackson said.  "They sounded like firecrackers - that's when everyone started running."

Thanks to their alerting authorities, the NYPD bomb squad, with the help of a remote-control robot, later confirmed the worst: The car contained a massive bomb.

"We dodged a bullet," Jackson said. "We're a family out here.  We have to look out for each other."

Gates Tells Legionnaires America Has The "Right Strategy In Afghanistan"
The American Legion National Press Release

Gates

MILWAUKEE

(Aug. 31, 2010)

The United State learned from its mistakes the first time it became involved in Afghanistan more than two decades ago, Department of Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Tuesday. Addressing the 92nd American Legion National Convention in Milwaukee, he told thousands of Legionnaires that today's Afghanistan strategy is geared to avoid previous errors.

"I would remind everyone that this country's leaders, myself included, made the mistake 20 years ago of abandoning Afghanistan to chaos, of believing its power-vacuum did not and should not concern us, and that we could eliminate threats from a distance at little cost to ourselves," he told Legionnaires. "As events have shown in New York, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, London, Madrid, Amman, Lahore, Jakarta and around the world - we were wrong.

"(Gen. David) Petraeus believes, I believe, and the president believes, that we now have the right strategy in Afghanistan, a strategy that represents our best chance of achieving goals essential to the safety of the United States: delivering a strategic defeat to Al-Qaeda and its extremist affiliates by rolling back the Taliban from their strongholds, building Afghan capacity to secure their own territory, and in so doing, denying a safe haven to terrorists that would attack our country once again. That is our objective and our strategy - and the only possible justification for the risks and sacrifices we ask of our troops."

Air Force Secretary Donley Renews Commitment To Airmen & Families
The American Legion National Press Release

Air Force Secretary Donley
MILWAUKEE
(Sept. 1, 2010)

Speaking at The American Legion's 92nd National Convention here, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley said that providing for airmen and their families will continue to be the service's "bottom line." He said it was "not only the right thing to do for our airmen, it is the smart thing to do for our Air Force."

Noting that 23,000 homes had been built or renovated for airmen and their families in fiscal 2010, Donley said the Air Force was increasing its community-based child care programs and plans to triple its number of liaison officers who work with Air Force children and local school systems.

Donley said that "nearly a decade of sustained combat operations" have imposed serious demands on Air Force families. He stressed the continuing need to support Air Force families and ensuring their health and wellness needs are properly met.
