VA Research Finds Possible Link Between Head Trauma & Chronic Traumatic Encephalomyopathy
Research May Lead to Better Treatment for ALS-Like Disease

ResearchWASHINGTON
(August 19, 2010)

Researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE) at Boston University School of Medicine have provided the first pathological evidence of a link between repeated head injuries-such as those experienced by athletes in contact sports such as boxing, football, and hockey-and a disease (chronic traumatic Encephalomyopathy) that resembles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The results will appear in the September issue of the Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology.

"This initial research shows great promise for further understanding what people go through after a traumatic brain injury, whether sustained on the battlefield, during a contact sport, or from other injury," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki. "Advancing our knowledge in this area is the key to better treatment outcomes."

NEWS RELEASE
Headquarters International Security Assistance Force - Afghanistan

2010-08-CA-016

ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) and ANSF (Afghan National Security Force) Gain Strength, Quash Taliban Momentum

KABUL, Afghanistan (August 25) - Intelligence reports indicate some pockets of low insurgent morale, with some insurgent fighters reluctant to keep fighting and some refusing to assume district commands when commanders are captured or killed. The low morale among fighters and insurgent leaders can be linked to ANSF and ISAF successful security operations. Coalition and ANSF forces conducted more than 2,800 counter-terrorist operations over the past 90 days, killing or capturing more than 365 insurgent leaders and 2,386 fighters. These counter-insurgency successes have also led to a growing sense of distrust among insurgent fighters, their heightened fear of spies, and increased suspicion between rival tribes.

"While the coalition strength and capability of the ANSF are on the rise, we are seeing evidence of low insurgent morale, which is affecting their capability across the country," said Brig. Gen. Blotz. "The coalition will continue to neutralize insurgents and eliminate their safe havens, expanding areas that are secure enough for improved governance and development."

The American Legion and Student Veterans of America are co-sponsoring a "Veterans on Campus" education symposium to be held Aug. 26-27 at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center.

Featured speakers for the event include Lynn Nelson, director of education for the Veterans Benefits Administration; Ruth Fanning, director of the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service; John Decoteau of the Universal Technical Institute; and R.K. Williams and Jennifer Matteson of the National Association of Veterans' Program Administrators.

"The transition to college life is quite a bit different for military veterans," said Brian Hawthorne, SVA's legislative director. U. S. Border Patrol Recruiting Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans
American Legion National Press Release

Department of Homeland SecurityMILWAUKEE
(August 18, 2010)

In a meeting with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano last year, The American Legion's national commander at the time, David K. Rehbein, was assured that the hiring of military veterans was among her agency's top priorities.  "We anticipate many openings for border patrol agents," she said. "Young veterans would be perfect for that job."

True to the secretary's word, DHS's U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency is now actively recruiting veterans returning from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Accordingly, CBP is conducting a dedicated hiring event during The American Legion's 92nd annual national convention in Milwaukee.  Interested veterans are invited to meet with CBP recruiters on Friday, Aug. 27th, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Hilton Milwaukee City Center's Crystal Ballroom.  Applicants must bring government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or passport, and a copy of their DD-214 military discharge papers.

The American Legion's Job Fairs for Veterans Competes For $250K Pepsi Refresh Everything Grant & Your Vote Is Needed!

The American Legion is demonstrating its commitment to helping military veterans find jobs by entering its career fairs in this month's Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. If the effort is successful, The American Legion will be awarded a $250,000 grant to sponsor events across the country in which employers are paired with veterans looking for work.

"The unemployment rate among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans exceeds 14 percent. This is a national disgrace!" said American Legion Nation Commander Clarence E. Hill. "Every veteran vowed to defend America and protect our way of life. The least we can do is to allow them an opportunity to support their families and contribute to America's workforce. Hiring veterans isn't just the right thing to do, but it is smart business! These talented men and women offer unique skills, discipline and a proven work ethic that would benefit any employer smart enough to hire them. Additionally, job fairs sponsored by The American Legion include Small Business Development Workshops so veterans can pursue the American dream."
