Quick Updates
| Excitement for the Harvest Hooteanny is growing! We have booked several bands and have some fun events planned. The planning committee is going to need volunteers soon. If you can help, please contact Ken Gardiner at 236-4196. ____________________________________________________________________________________ We have postponed the Poker Run for classic cars until next year. The extra planning time should allow us to have a much more successful event. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Tanya Reed from CRMS, Freddyeanne Danielson of Hope Elementary School, and Jeremy Clough and Amy Watson of the Ashwood Waldorf School all attended the Life Skills Training curriculum workshop for teachers on August 24th. Although the workshop got off to a rough start (the trainer was 45 minutes late!) the staff were troopers and spent the entire day immersed in the curriculum.
We have offered to assist with materials preparation, trouble-shooting, and team teaching if the teachers need a bit of help. Camden-Rockport Middle School has committed to delivering the program, as has Hope Elementary School. Ashwood Waldorf school staff are still deciding whether they will implement this year or not.
In addition to arranging for the training, FTCTC has provided one set of each of the three levels of teachers manuals, CDs, and student workbooks for the first year at HES. (We did the same for CRMS when they first implemented.) Should Ashwood Waldorf decide to implement we will provide them with the same. ____________________________________________________________________________________ I have not yet completely finished filing our Charitable Solicitations license, (just need to get the financial report notarized) but should have it finished up before the end of next week. ____________________________________________________________________________________ I will be starting to organize a few focus groups in the community to try to uncover some of the barriers to volunteering to be a Big Brothers, Big Sisters mentor for adults in our community. Hopefully we can find ways to remove the barriers and help BBBS expand the number of matches in our community, as this program has been shown to address our priority risk factor of low commitment to school. ____________________________________________________________________________________ The Youth Involvement Work Group has created an invitation that will go out to all Camden Hills Regional High School students in mid-September asking for students to apply to become Five Town CTC Youth Advisors. If you know a high school aged student who has committed to being drug and alcohol free and would like to help forward our mission, please encourage them to apply. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Eric Waters and new board member Neal Blake began working with me to finalize our 2011 budget. We are truly blessed to have two such talented board members to help with this! ____________________________________________________________________________________ On August 17th I delivered a Suicide Prevention and Awareness training to my fellow CTC Coordinators who were part of the CYDS project. Brigham City Utah has experienced the loss of 5 young people in just a few months, and when we began talking about it the other coordinators felt it would be good for them to have the training, too. Many thanks to Linda Williams of the Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Program for providing me with updated Gatekeeper materials to use. If you know of any local groups who might benefit from training, let me know. ____________________________________________________________________________________ We are winding down this year's major PR efforts. We have just a couple of additional print ads to go out to honor our partners, and have halted the radio PSA's until we can get some new ones recorded.

Kick-A-Thon Raises $950 for Five Town CTC!
|
"We all have something to give. Whether contributing our time,
our talents, or our treasures, the value is the same. Charity can be
counted in large sums of money or absolutely none at all.." - Dr. Robyn Silverman -Mid- Coast Martial Arts Child Development Expert
At Mid-Coast Martial Arts in Rockport, August 2010 is Charity Month.
As part of the POWerful Words Character Development program, students
have been studying, developing and experiencing powerful life lessons
focusing on charity in a fun and exciting way that benefits everybody.
In addition to physical skills associated with martial arts, students
have been discussing and practicing concepts that will help them to
realize and appreciate the value and benefit of participating in
charity. Students focused on the following topics both in and out of
class:
* What is charity? How can I share my treasures with those in need?
*What are my talents? How can they help those in need?
*How can I share my time? How can my time be helpful to others?
*Can children really make a difference? How can giving impact the giver?
Together, the Mid-Coast Martial Arts students used their talents to
raise $950 for Five Town Communities That Care by hosting a Kick-A-Thon;
students sought pledges in exchange for completing 100 kicks.
Andrew Lesmerises, Chief Instructor of Mid-Coast Martial Arts says,
"We're really excited about Charity month here at our academy. This is
another wonderful opportunity for our students to experience real
life...and have the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives
of some people in our community. I was particularly impressed by one
young man who started classes this week-he went out and raised $165.
Our students and their families are amazing people, and this month, as
we teach and experience Charity, everybody will win."
Dalene Dutton, Executive Director of Five Town Communities That Care
accepted the donation from the students. "We know that when young
people are given the opportunity to learn skills that they then can then
use in service to their community, they are less likely to engage in
problem behaviors and much more likely to grow to be healthy, happy
citizens. Through the Kick-A-Thon, not only have they raised funds to
ensure that Five Town CTC can continue helping youth in our community,
they've done it in a way that really brings our mission to life." |
