Jody Spangler, of the Ashwood Waldorf School stopped by the Five Town CTC offices on Thursday to explore the services that we provide.    We discussed several options for the school to consider, including a policy review, staff training in inhalants, and collaboration on the school delivering the Life Skills Training curriculum.

On August 2nd I will be in Washington, D.C. to participate in a focus group on the implementation of the President's 2011 plan to test his "Prevention-Prepared Communities" model.  Specifically, they are thinking about the issues involved with evaluating a large scale test (there will be 30 communities awarded in the 2011 round) of a community-level intervention.

Nicole was in for a bit on Thursday.  I really am looking forward to working with her and hope everyone can make her feel welcome!

A Range of Responses to Address Underage Alcohol Offenders:  Is One Approach More Effective than Another?

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Treatment of underage drinking offenses by the justice community, in general and in the courts, is often inconsistent.  On one end of the spectrum are aggressive penalties established in the law, which may make judges reluctant to give a young person a record.  At the opposite end are laws, which make underage alcohol issues a status offense or offer the Court little opportunity to impose meaningful penalties on adult providers who engage the justice community.  So how have jurisdictions approached these problems? What policy implications, if any, exist because of the jurisdictional approach to underage alcohol cases?  Our program will look at a range of responses applied by the justice community to address underage alcohol problems.   Our faculty will examine which strategies, or combination of strategies, are most effective in addressing these issues.

in closing...
I had a great time last weekend with our Board Chair Dick Strong and some other friends.  Dick took a group of us out on his sailboat for a trip through the Fox Island Thoroughfare.  My young friend Keng Geo and his cousin Yong went along with us.  Keng had a great time, but Yong was pretty seasick the entire time!
