Dear Board, Work Group Members, and Staff; |
What an adventure David and I had in the Great North Woods! I am feeling much revived and refreshed (and a little sunburned)!
A lake trout, also known as a togue. (I let it go so that it could get bigger for my next trip.) |

Quick Updates
| Skip Bates of Bangor Savings-and a Board member for United Mid Coast Charities-stopped by for a visit on Tuesday. UMCC assigns a different member of their Board to come and learn about what we do each year before making its annual funding allocations. It is a great opportunity for us to spread the word about our mission and services. ____________________________________________________________________________________
On Friday the folks from the provincial government of Manitoba will be "meeting" with Blair Brooke-Weiss from UW, myself, and CTC trainer Caroline Cruz (who will be providing training to the First Nation communities in Manitoba) by phone. It is very exciting to be part of this project! I have learned that in addition to the Elmwood neighborhood in Winnipeg, I will be going to Swan River to train. Swan River is a small community that is a little over 5 hours by car from Winnipeg. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Lynn Johnson (of our Coalition Maintenance Workgroup) and Neil Blake (auditor for Camden National Bank) visited our July 12 Board meeting. We hope we can look forward to their continued involvement!
Adam Kohlstrom (of our Youth Involvement Workgroup) will hopefully be joining us at our next Board meeting! ____________________________________________________________________________________ The Sexual Assault and Crisis Center has an excellent newsletter and website (Silentnomore.org). There are some great resources and a link to a special site just for teens, too. Rachel Linton, one of their educators, has come to CHRHS to provide parent training related to sexual assault prevention at our request. Check it out! ____________________________________________________________________________________ New York's Senator Schumer called for the Federal Trade Commission to investigate alcoholic energy drinks on Monday. A copy of his statement can be accessed through his website: http://schumer.senate.gov/new_website/record.cfm?id=326308
I encourage you all to become educated about these type of drinks, and to be prepared to join in any debate that may arise about them. ____________________________________________________________________________________ We have gotten two reviews on the Great Non-Profits website so far. Help us find more people to write reviews! The page location for Five Town CTC's listing is http://greatnonprofits.org/reviews/five-town-communities-that-care/

Board of Directors Bids Reluctant Good-Bye to Pat Hopkins
|
Long-time Five Town CTC Board member and Superintendent Patricia Hopkins announced that she is leaving the MIdcoast area and will be taking the helm as Superintendent of Schools in Gardiner. She will be sorely missed, both in her role as superintendent AND as a FTCTC Board member!
If you see her before she leaves at the end of the month, be sure to thank her for her service!

Blue Sky Cantina donates $300+
| Ron from the Blue Sky Cantina called to say that he had a check that had been pinned to his bulletin board for awhile...it was a donation check from the Cuisine for a Cause campaign back in April and May for over $300! What a nice surprise for a Monday morning! Be sure to thank Ron or his wife the next time you are in Blue Sky Cantina or Big Fish!

More evidence of CTC Effectiveness!
| The Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center (EPISCenter) at Penn State University has forwarded some information that I felt important to share. As you may know, the latest issue of Prevention Science features a study done by Penn State comparing communities using CTC versus non CTC communities. The results provide more evidence that kids in communities using CTC have better outcomes. I can provide copies of the article if you would like, but here are some highlights from their 5 year, longitudinal study: - 11% less delinquency
- 33% better academic achievement
- 16% greater school engagement
- 11% less antisocial peer influences

STAR |
Nicole O'Brien Blake will be starting as an interim STAR Coordinator in the next couple of weeks. Nicole has been a member of our Funding Workgroup for a few months, and has moved back to Maine from D.C. with her husband.
I am very excited that Nicole has agreed to take the reins on STAR. This will be especially important while we await word from the Annie E. Casey foundation, which may involve a slight restructuring of the administration of STAR if we are awarded a grant to manualize the program. Please be sure to welcome her when you see her next!

Conferences and Training | A Range of Responses to Address Underage Alcohol Offenders: Is One Approach More Effective than Another? COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Treatment of underage drinking offenses by the justice community, in general and in the courts, is often inconsistent. On one end of the spectrum are aggressive penalties established in the law, which may make judges reluctant to give a young person a record. At the opposite end are laws, which make underage alcohol issues a status offense or offer the Court little opportunity to impose meaningful penalties on adult providers who engage the justice community. So how have jurisdictions approached these problems? What policy implications, if any, exist because of the jurisdictional approach to underage alcohol cases? Our program will look at a range of responses applied by the justice community to address underage alcohol problems. Our faculty will examine which strategies, or combination of strategies, are most effective in addressing these issues.
