Five Town CTC
Five Town Communities That Care
June 29, 2010                          Executive Director's Update
Vol 2, Issue 22
Dear Board, Work Group Members, and Staff;
The weeks just fly by!  It hardly seems possible that a whole week has gone since I sent out an update, but it has!

I hope that you are all taking advantage of opportunities you may have this summer to make a difference in the life of a child that you know.  Many young people loose important supports when school is not in session...

Five Town CTC offices closed for vacation the week of July 5-9.

Quick Updates
Folks from the Westbrook Children's Cabinet came for a site visit on 29th.  They met with Chief Phil Roberts, Patricia Hopkins, Dick Strong, Peter Russell, Sheryl Whittier and I at the Three Dog Cafe.  They will be voting next week on whether to go forward to implement CTC and promised to keep us posted!

The Letter of Intent to Apply has gone in to the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  We should hear by mid-July whether they will accept a proposal from us regarding manualization of the STAR program.  If they DO invite us to apply, we will need to have our submission in by August 13th!
MCC Benefit Concert Yields $10,000 for FIve Town CTC!

On Friday, June 25th, Midcoast Community Chorus (MCC) Executive and Artistic Director Mimi Bornstein presented Five Town Communities That Care Board Chair Dick Strong with a donation of $9500 from MCC.  The monies represent proceeds from MCC's June 12 concert to benefit Five Town Communities That Care, entitled "It takes a Village."

More than 800 seats in the Strom Auditorium were full on that night, and more than 100 community members made up the chorus.  Music was selected to fit the overall theme of the concert and the mission of the concert beneficiary.  During several of the pieces the audience was encouraged to sing along with the chorus-this resulted in nearly 1000 voices being raised in song and a very powerful atmosphere in the auditorium.

During intermission members of Lincolnville's United Christian Church offered a delicious variety of baked goodies and bottled water.  Through their efforts they raised more than $500 additional dollars for Five Town Communities That Care.

Table Talks
Sheryl Whittier has delivered three additional Table Talks since my last update.  Two were organized by the folks at Lincolnville United Christian Church, and the third was hosted by Mary Wells.  Here are some comments when folks were asked what they liked about the Table Talks:
  • Talking and sharing with other parents
  • Listening to the perspectives and opinions of other parents
  • Listening to other parents' suggestions on how to handle different situations
  • Knowing other parents care
  • Sharing like concerns
  • Kids' peer group parents talking together
  • The prompts used to get people talking
  • The facts provided (brain development, etc.)
  • Connecting with other parents
We are still seeking parents of adolescents to host more of these discussions.  If you or someone you know might be interested, please call Sheryl at the CTC offices (236-9800).
STAR
Unfortunately, I have to report that Douglas "Tug" Kellough is no longer serving as our STAR program coordinator. We anticipate that we will have an interim coordinator in place soon, and will be sure to keep you all posted!

in closing...
I am looking forward to my vacation next week...  We are traveling to a remote cabin on Spider Lake (above Baxter State Park) that has no electricity or running water.  No cell phone service either!  SO....you won't be hearing from me next week!  Hopefully I will be tan, rested, and tired from catching monster trout all week.  Wish me luck.
