Five Town Communities That Care
June 7, 2010                          Executive Director's Update
Vol 2, Issue 20
Dear Board, Work Group Members, and Staff;
I am once again honored to be able to represent our Coalition at a national event this week.  It makes me very proud to be able to tell others around the country about all of the hard work being done by members of our community to promote healthy youth development.

On Friday I will be in Washington, D.C. at the Mental Health America annual meeting, where Dr. J. David Hawkins is delivering a plenary speech on the CTC system.  It is always inspirational to hear him talk!  I will be there to provide a community perspective on using the CTC system for the attendees after his talk.  If there is something in particular you want me to be sure to share, drop me an email!
Important Dates
Monday June 7- Friday, June 11: I will be traveling, and unavailable during much of the workday times.  You will still be able to reach me via email, or leave messages on my cell phone voicemail.

Saturday, June 12:

Quick Updates
The folks at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Camden have asked us to share information about an upcoming talk by Robin Hoagland on June 12 at 3PM at High Mountain Hall. In this lecture (entitled "Wanted--a God I can believe in") Ms. Hoagland tells about her healing from recurring depression and thoughts of suicide.  For more information, contact Katy Dermott at 236-3484.  Please pass this info on to those you think might be interested.

We are still seeking a trainer to be able to offer a local Life Skills Training curriculum teacher training in the five towns.  So far, we have been unable to connect with anyone who is certified and available this summer to help train folks from CRMS and HES.

June is Internet Safety Month and a great opportunity to make sure children are safe online. Predators, identity thieves, and a wide array of scam artists use the Internet to commit crimes. Parents should carefully monitor their children's use of computers and decide if unique accounts or parental controls are needed. Some helpful tips are available from the United States Computer Emergency Awareness Team, part of the Department of Homeland Security.  (http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST05-002.html)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folks from the Westbrook Children's Cabinet would like to do a site visit with us on June 29th.  I will keep you posted as they provide more details about exactly what they would like to see and who they would like to talk to.

Several local physicians are taking a look at a brief screening tool for adolescents (the CRAFFT) provided to us through the Maine Office of Substance Abuse's provider network.  They have been asked to let us know whether they would agree to use it, and what, if any, concerns the tool might bring up.
STAR

There were approximately 130 people at the STAR celebration at Hope Elementary School on Thursday.   It was a great way to end our 19th cycle and the last one of this school year.

Quarterly Coalition Meetings
If you know of an individual or agency/group doing great things for our local kids, send an email along with their name and why you think they should be honored as a youth advocate.  There are great people out there who are doing great things for kids...get their names in so that we can honor them!

Also, our next meeting is scheduled for mid-August.  Let us know if you have ideas for keynote topics!

5 Tips for Monitoring Your Teen Flyers
Sheryl Whittier has been distributing the "Five Things" flyers for us to the local groceries, convenience stores, and pizza shops.  We are requesting that merchants place the flyers on pizza boxes and in grocery bags.  There has been a very positive response so far! (If you would like to see a copy of the flyer complete with our logo, drop Sheryl an email (mentors@fivetownctc.org). The flyer provides five tips for parents during the especially risky Prom and Graduation season:

Tip 1: Limit Access

If you have alcohol in your home, keep track of it-know what and how much you have, and keep it where it is not accessible to teens.

Tip 2: Network

Get to know the parents of your teen's friends. Let the parents of your teen's friends know your rules and where you stand on underage alcohol use.

Tip 3: Enforce Rules

Enforce your rules consistently. Don't look the other way if your teen violates the rules. They need to know you're serious.

Tip 4: Check in Often

Be sure your teen knows how to reach you before they leave the house. Ask if adults will be present and if anyone will have alcohol.

Tip 5: Be Up & Be Ready

Wait up, or set the alarm for curfew time. When they arrive home, look for signs of use. Be prepared in advance for what you would do the FIRST time you discover that your teen has been drinking.
Conferences and Trainings

The 'SIMPLE' Way to Hold Employees Accountable

The key to any manager's success is holding employees accountable for results.  Unfortunately, many are overwhelmed by the time, effort and know-how required. SIMPLE Accountability is quick and effective: a 6-step method that gets results through goals, commitment and buy-in.  This is not traditional discipline masquerading as an accountability model.  It's simple enough to learn and apply today-effective enough to positively impact your employees forever.

This MANP SkillBuilder will include:

  • Tips on how to hold employees accountable by setting expectations and getting buy-in up front
  • Strategies for giving feedback that is heard, accepted and acted upon
  • How to use disciplinary measures in a positive way

in closing...
Also in this action-packed week, I am headed back to Penn State for the final leg of the Communities That Care Train the Trainer series.  It has been a great gift for me to be able to have this time to work with some very skilled facilitators and CTC experts.  Once finished with this final classroom segment, I still have to deliver a training to another community under the watchful eye of a master trainer, but the end is nearly in sight!  It will be wonderful to finally be officially certified as a CTC Trainer!  Keep the lights on while I am away!
