From our Board Chair, Dick Strong:
|
From an email sent on May 14th:
"I spoke to Lesa Brown, Rockland Pizza Hut manager, today to see if she had gotten any feedback from her bosses about the letter I sent to Pizza Hut's V.P. summarizing Lesa's much appreciated support to STAR.
Lesa told me that on Wednesday (2 days ago) that she was attending a Pizza Hut manager's meeting. She was called up to receive the letter and praise for what she was doing for a non-profit, and was commended in front of everyone for her excellent community work. She was told that the letter was copied by Pizza Hut senior management and sent to every area and shop manager as an example of how they should be responding to community needs in Pizza Hut's name (i.e., good PR). Lesa said Pizza Hut corporate management is starting a campaign to get it's managers to be more proactive in their communities and to their customers. Lesa was cited as an example of how they wanted their managers to act. Lesa was made very proud by the recognition we spawned from her superiors. She was very pleased by the extra step FTCTC took to notify her boss(es) of how much we appreciate her as a Pizza Hut community-minded employee.
Lesson to be learned: a proactive, and a "step above the norm" (e.g., letter to corporate), acknowledgment of our appreciation to our supporters and partners often pays off for them (and us) in ways we might not have predicted."

Table Talks
| We have been awarded a small grant from SAMHSA to conduct a series of Table Talks in the community. These are small, intimate gathers of parents who know one another where a facilitator takes the group through a series of exercises related to youth alcohol use.
We are currently seeking parents of middle-schoolers to act as hosts for the Table Talks. For more information, contact Sheryl Whittier at the FTCTC offices (236-9800 or mentors@fivetownctc.org).

Quarterly Coalition Meetings
| PLEASE SEND IN NOMINATIONS for Youth Advocate Award winners. If you know of an individual or agency / group doing great things for our local kids, send an email along with their name and why you think they should be honored as a youth advocate. There are great people out there who are doing great things for kids...get their names in so that we can honor them!
Our next meeting is scheduled for mid-August. Let us know if you have ideas for keynote topics!

"Lucky 13" board truths
Making sure that managers don't get bored with boards, or that boards don't get bored is an important part of ensuring success.
Speaking at the recent Association of Fundraising Professionals' international conference, June Bradham, president of DevelopMint, and an expert on board makeup and operations, offered her insights into getting the best out of boards.
Bradham, who has received numerous awards and widespread recognition for her work with nonprofit boards, said that her observations, work with, and on, boards and discussions she has had with people who have served on boards has led her to draw the following conclusions about getting the best from boards.
Board success, then, comes from the following components:
- Stellar board makeup.
- Passion for the cause.
- A dedicated, smart and visible CEO.
- An inspiring CEO who engages board members.
- Plenty of time for board members to socialize.
- Trust and transparency.
- Asks that follow a great experience, not just a sense of obligation.
- Plenty of opportunities for board members to get their hands dirty.
- Meaningful lessons that complement current skill sets, not training sessions.
Bradham also suggested the following action steps:
Revisit board recruitment. Are you asking the right questions and meeting several times? Examine board meetings. Is there time for socializing and is there active discussion? Arrange for the chair and CEO to meet with board members individually. Start more informal CEO-board interactions, in and out of meetings.

Be sure to congratulate Board member Andrew Lesmerises on the arrival of his first child, Oliver Odin Lesmerises who was born at 4:04 PM on May 9th, weighing in
at 7lbs 13 oz and measuring 20 3/4 inches!
My middle child (Deanne) has returned from the wilds of Manhattan after finishing up her four-month internship at the New York Theatre Workshop, so the house is once again full of her creative energy. Hopefully some of it will rub off on me!
