March 23, 2010 Executive Director's Update

Vol 2, Issue 14

|
|
Greetings!
|
I wanted to take a moment to clarify the purpose of these Executive Director Updates. They are meant to be an INTERNAL document, and are not written for the general public. They go to Board members, work group members, and staff in an attempt to keep people informed of the things that I am involved in that don't fall into one of the work groups' areas of responsibility. They are not meant to substitute for a newsletter or any work group minutes, but to fill in the gaps not covered by our various other reporting systems.
If you feel this tool is not useful, or that the information is not relevant, PLEASE let me know. If it is not useful, I won't spend the time continuing to do it or can take you off of the list.

I attended the CTC Training of Trainers (TOT) event in Pennsylvania on March 8th and 9th. I will also be attending the second leg of training April 14 and 15 (also at Penn State in State College, PA.). The third and final segment of the training has not yet been scheduled. Lisa Ettinger and Dick Strong will be attending the BluePrints

The Maine Inhalant Abuse Work Group, the Office of Substance Abuse, MethWatch (MAPSA), and AdCare Educational are pleased to announce a one day training featuring two workshops! The morning workshop is titled " Inhalant Abuse: It's Right Under Your Nose" and the afternoon workshop is "Methamphetamine in Maine: Understanding the Drug and What You Can Do at the Community Level". Please go to www.neias.org/SATadregme.html to download the brochure and/or register online. We are now moving forward on the Manitoba CTC training (Winnipeg and one other city, yet to be determined). Guiding Good Choices |
The GGC session is underway with ten parents. Rob and Julianna Pfeiffer are facilitating and we have three staffers (Ingrid Perry, Lynne Clark, and Sam
Grinnell) helping with the large and diverse group of children the families have been bringing along. The third night of the program (the one where the youth attend with their parents) is tonight.
|
Quarterly Coalition Meeting
|
We still need nominations for Youth Advocate Award winners. If you know of an individual or agency / group doing great things for our local kids, send an email along with their name and why you think they should be honored as a youth advocate.
|
Work Group and Board Meetings
|
The Youth
Involvement Work Group met on 3/4. They have surveyed the
students at Camden Hills Regional High School about ways kids want to be
recognized, and are working on putting together a "job description" for
CTC Youth Advisory Committee members.
The Board of
Directors met on 3/15. Minutes from that meeting are available
at the FTCTC office.

Quick Updates
|
Dick, Peter and I met with Representative Joan Welsh to discuss concerns we had about the loss of the MYDAUS and the move to the new state survey of youth (loss of risk and protective factor data) and the challenges of having all prevention funding flow through the local HMP entities.
I participated in the MAPSA steering committee meeting on 3/11. Maine LD 1691 An Act to Amend Laws Pertaining to Taste Testing of Alcoholic Beverages is being considered now. Please take the time to educate yourself about the bill and its implications and then contact your elected representatives to let them know how you feel.
On March 18 Dick and I met with some folks from the Blue Hill area re: getting a CTC Coalition going on the peninsula. They had heard about us when we had all of the press for the Town Hall meeting, and feel that there is some momentum that may be able to be used to get CTC off of the ground in their communities. We will let you all know if anything else comes of the meeting.
Also on March 18th Ken Gardiner and I met with representatives from West Bay Rotary regarding a potential Harvest Hootenanny. We are exploring some details and the Rotarians will attend our meeting on the 26th.
I met with Nicole O'Brien-Blake (a former student of mine who has just moved back into the area after leaving in DC for several years). She is interested in getting involved with Five Town CTC and may be joining work group meetings to see where she thinks the best fit for her is. Please welcome her if she shows up at yours!
At the request of Principal Carol Hathorne, I presented to a group of concerned parents on March 22nd at the Hope Elementary School. The presentation was in response to arrests related to marijuana on school grounds last week. Forty people attended (Dick Strong and Tug Kellough came from FTCTC); I presented information on current and historical rates of substance use, and specific info on marijuana. If you would like a copy of the powerpoint, let me know.
I have had phone conversations with Dr. Abby Fagan of the University of South Carolina and Dr. Tony Biglan of the Oregon Research Institute regarding upcoming presentations. Dr. Biglan has also put me in touch with Dr. Dennis Embry of PAXIS. It was great to talk to Abby again! It was also nice to get to know Dr. Biglan a bit more before we present together.
You may have seen some info out there asking for parent hosts for Table Talk sessions. This is the OSA sponsored meetings in lieu of Town Halls that are funded by SAMHSA. We need to host six meetings (small groups in a private home is what they really want) to satisfy the requirements; there is a budget of $500 to accomplish this. If you are interested in facilitating, or if you have middle school kids and wish to host a meeting, let me know.
|
in closing...
|
I certainly have plenty of projects to keep me busy at home. Dave brought home yet another classic car last weekend (a '64 Galaxie 500 that has been in a barn for 27 years)! I hope he doesn't expect me to take time away from my Imperials to work on his Ford! Geesh!
