BluePrints Conference 2010
Conferences and Trainings

Is anyone interested in attending the BluePrints Conference in San Antonio, TX (April 7-9)?  Take a look at the conference site and let me know if you are interested in attending.  I will need to add people to the reservations before the end of February to get the cheaper rate.

UW has arranged for me to attend a CTC Training of Trainers (TOT) event in Pennsylvania on March 8th and 9th.  UW will cover my hotel and meals.  This will allow me to get a bit of experience with the Training of CTC Trainers event, so that I can be certified to deliver this level of instruction.  (Right now I am certified to DO the community trainings, not teach other people how to do the community trainings.)  Also attending will be a representative of the group in Manitoba who may want me to help train their communities.  I will need to attend two more follow up TOT events to become certified.
SuperBowl Survey with Drug Free Action Alliance
We successfully surveyed middle and high school students regarding the commercials they saw during the SuperBowl.  To read about the national level results (we reported local results to them) go to: http://www.fivetownctc.org/2010/02/10/drug-free-action-alliance-superbowl-survey/.  Our local student results were quite similar...alcohol ads were widely remembered but did not place in the top 3 favorites among youth. Doritos stole the show-their commercials were the top 3 picks. For MS students Budwiser's "Stranded" and "Clydesdale" commercials came in at #4 and #5. For HS youth Budwiser's ..."Human Bridge" and Snickers' "Betty White" ad held the 4th and 5th spots.

DFC News
DFC Program
The Year Three DFC application was due on February 22.  I sent it out on the 18th via overnight mail.  Work groups will need to review the work plan and make sure that what is included is on target and on your radar.

Please remember to log your volunteer hours!  We need to make sure we those documented each month.  If you need new log sheets, let me know.  Also, if you meet in a location other than the CTC offices, please note that on your meeting sheets, as we can use the value of any donated meeting space towards our match.
Guiding Good Choices
Guiding Good ChoicesThe new GGC session is ready to roll beginning on March 2nd.  It will be
facilitated by Rob and Julianna Pfeiffer.  We mailed to all area parents of kids 9-14 years old and put the word out online and in the newspapers.  Please let any parents YOU know of the opportunity, and encourage them to contact Sheryl if they have questions, or need a registration form.
Quarterly Coalition Meeting
The next Coalition Network Meeting will be held in late April or early May.  We need nominations for Youth Advocate Award winners.  If you know of an individual or agency / group doing great things for our local kids, send an email along with their name and why you think they should be honored as a youth advocate.

As a result of discussions at our last meeting, Dick Strong, Peter Russell, Lynn Johnson and I met with Mary O'Rear of Mainely Girls to discuss the potential for getting a late bus that would serve middle and high school students.  As a result of the meeting Dalene will be asking the Youth Involvement Work Group if they can do a little data gathering on the need and interest in such a bus.
Quick Updates
--> I am working on an amendment to our Conflict of Interest Policy which will include the provisions dealing with employment of relatives of staff or Board members and the exclusion which will allow us to have Ken set up the retirement plan for us.  By the way, all staff and Board members should sign a copy of the COI each year.  If you haven't, see me!

--> I have not yet heard back from Abel Ortiz of the Annie E. Casey Foundation regarding if there is any interest in testing STAR in some of the Foundation's communities.  I will let you know if I hear anything from him.

--> Tug and I met with Peter Brough of the Maine Department of Education as part of an audit of the Five Town CSD's Title IVA grant.  (We have been receiving this money each year to support STAR.)  Mr. Brough was very impressed with our community's work and asked many questions about CTC and how it works.

--> Lori Bailey of Renew updated our main database over the last couple of weeks.  It now does many of the reporting functions automatically and includes additional templates that make database life easier.  Lori is now working on the creation of a database that we will use to track our outreach efforts and PR pieces.  We hope to have the maiden version of that tool by the end of next week.

--> The PR Work Group met Tuesday, Feb 16th at Three Dog Cafe.  They are working hard at getting an overall plan for the year's outreach efforts in place.

--> Dick Strong, Peter Russell, Lisa Ettinger, Kim Grinnell, and I met with Mimi Bornstein and Amy Dorskey of the Midcoast Community Chorus to begin to work out who would need to do what by when for the June benefit concert.  If you haven't already put it in your calendar, save the date of the concert: Saturday, June 12 at 7PM @ the Strom Auditorium in Rockport.

Life Skills Training
LST logo There is now an online training option for LST.  To read more about this, visit:  http://www.lifeskillstraining.com/training_overview.php

We may want to explore offering this for our CRMS teachers currently implementing the program, or anyone from the other schools who wishes to explore implementing it.
in closing...
I am going to head home early today, as it is my birthday!  I am looking forward to the weekend and doing some tinkering on my Imperials.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend as well.
