New Study Shows Cocaine often adulterated by Levamisole
|
Did
you know that 45% of cocaine in a recent analysis of drugs seized by
the DEA tested positive for the potentially fatal drug Lavamisole?
Lavamisole is an anti-parasitic drug discontinued for human use in the
U.S. in 2000 due to serious side-effects. The percentage of cocaine
seizures adulterated with Lavamisole ha...s
been steadily increasing since 2002...Ingestion of levamisole can lead
to agranulocytosis, a serious condition in which white blood cells are
dramatically reduced. Warning signs of agranulocytosis are high fever,
chills, weakness, swollen glands, painful anal or oral sores, thrush,
skin infections and abscesses, and any infection that won't go away or
worsens quickly, including sore throat and pneumonia. Any idividual who
has used cocaine and is experiencing any of the above symptoms should
seek medical help immediately.

DFC News

I have received communications back from both our Project Officer (Toby Manns-Royal) and our Grants Management Officer (Karen Warner) that the reports I submitted were received and accepted without need for modification. We were able to expend all year one funds without the need to request a roll-over.
Diane Vatne and I have been working on the draft DFC Mentor grant application for us to work with Greater Old Town CTC (GOT CTC). We met again (via SKYPE) to discuss the work plan and budget for this two year, up to $75K per year opportunity. Currently, the plan is to deliver the entire suite of CTC trainings to the new members over approximately 18 months. The match for this grant would come from a combination of the donation of my time as a CTC trainer and the local GOT CTC efforts.
