Freshman from the University of Rochester volunteered at the Gandhi Institute during the annual Wilson Day.  Students picked up trash along the Genesee River and learned about permaculture by preparing flower beds in our community garden.

"There's been a break in faith with the current justice system, which is important for all kinds of reasons," Barter says. "If people start breaking away from the justice system, it reveals a larger split within society, and the giving up of hope that mainstream society will actually treat everybody as equal and take care of everyone."

Letter from the Director

 Dear friends,

This month is the grand opening of our Institute's beautiful new home and impossibly it is also the month that our beloved board president Karen Trueheart died unexpectedly. Karen taught and embodied mindfulness to everyone she came in contact with. Below is a text she shared with us many times as a compassion meditation. I am so glad to hear her voice in these words.

If you are able, join us September 30 to remember Karen and to dedicate this new home for the Gandhi Institute as a beacon for lived nonviolence in our community and beyond.

This comes with love,

Kit Miller

Director

May I be kind to myself

May I be peaceful

May I be free from suffering

This summer Karen recorded a CD, a gift for all of us who will miss her.  www.dancingwithuncertainty.com

* We dedicate this issue to Karen Trueheart

Yesterday was a double anniversary.  On September 11, 1906 Gandhi and three thousand Hindus and Muslims took a vow of non-cooperation with discriminatory laws passed by the South African government.  Their struggle ended in victory because they faithfully remembered the connection between means and ends.  Would this other September 11 have occurred if that lesson had been learned?

We'll meet twice a month to discuss the book chapter by chapter. This will be a peer-led group rather than a teaching session or lecture! As we learn together from the book and each other, we'll examine where we can learn experientially and share what we learn with our communities.
