 Greetings!

View from my kitchen window!

Spring has bloomed early this year in Massachusetts, and therehave been some very mixed weather messages.  One week it was summer like weather and all the flowering trees started to bloom, and then it turned more seasonable. Both the spring flowers and the bird population are confused!  Though, it really doesn't matter, I am happy it is April 2012 and grateful that it is spring!

Last month in the LET'S GET STARTED segment we talked about Pots and Pans!  For April I want to move up to the Attic or Crawl space under the roof, where we put the holiday decorations, old prom dresses, and other items we have not been able to part with, because you never know when someone will need the item.   April is an excellent month to work up in the attic because it is cool you don't want to work up there in the heat of the summer.

Also at this time of year, I am always amazed at the abundance of yard sales that pop up every weekend. I swear that some people make it a business, and every Saturday morning they set up shop!

Always remember you do not need to be moving to downsize and declutter. So, if you have a problem area that you need some help with, send me an email at; [email protected]  and I will cover your problem area in the LET'S GET STARTED! article.

Enjoy the newsletter.

Yard Sales, are they worth it?

To have a yard sale or not, is a big question especially as we head into the peak yard sale season. Is it worth it? Will I make any money or am I wasting my time and energy?

The answer in my opinion: it depends!

I know that is not much of an answer, but it does depend on a few factors.

  • The quantity and quality of the items for sale
  • What time of year and the weather conditions
  • Items are priced right with room for negotiation and compromise items will sell.

There are 2 types of buyers at sales; pickers and lookers!

  • Pickers are out enjoying the hunt, looking for a bargain. They will plow through items no matter how unorganized or dirty to find their bargain.
  • Lookers walk around once, and if things are messy, unorganized, and dirty they usually will not stay.

Balance your time and energy to entice the lookers, because the pickers will ignore most everything and dive right in.

So the answer to the question is still: IT DEPENDS!

You could sell enough to pay for the junk person or dumpster to dispose the remaining items OR you could sell everything and make a killing!

Happy yard saling!

LET'S GET STARTED!

April Is A Great Time For An Attic Treasure Hunt

In New England we are blessed with a great many big homes that have an abundance of space to store and put away treasure for safe keeping. There are also plenty of smaller houses with limited space for stuff to accumulate, but everyone finds or makes space for their treasures.  One of the spaces that has been over used throughout the years is the Attic.

I grew up in a large house with two very large finished bedrooms in the walk up attic; one I shared with my younger sister and my brother had the other room.   But on either side of the rooms were doors leading to storage spaces -- called eaves.  These were great places to tuck items away for safe keeping as well as  wonderful places to play "hide and seek" or just hide things when you are told to clean your room!

Whatever the size the attic space, it is usually the last place that people think about cleaning out and the very first place to bring our most prized treasures!   What kind of treasures can be found in attics?

  • Old clothing, that when left out of sight for a few years quickly become "vintage" clothing.  Great for the children or grandchildren to play dress up on rainy days!
  • Books, read once and too good to throw away.
  • Magazines, like National Geographic -- you never know when someone might need a great map!
  • Bridal Gowns, Bride Maids gowns, prom dresses, that we paid lots of money for but only wore them once.
  • Military uniforms and memorabilia out of sight but not forgotten.
  • Photographs, old movies, and slides of family and events.
  • Old furniture (baby and other stuff) along with children toys and clothes
  • Holiday decorations
  • Trunks filled with relics from the day!

These and many other wonderful items are found in attics throughout the world.  It is from thousands of attics that many antiques have been hidden away and rediscovered. The longer a family has lived in the home the more treasures to discover. When my family was moving from family home we found many treasures, but before anything was disposed of we went through everything and separated things into various categories - Keep, Donate, Toss, or Give to Family.

Of course, the value of any treasure discovered is always dependent on the quality, uniqueness, and scarcity of the particular items.  Attics have always been the source of great treasure hunts throughout the years, as well as the source of great agony.  For families who have to clear out and dispose of their valued treasures, it is difficult and timme and patience is a valuable commodity when sorting and clearing attic treasures.

Care and concern should be given with all items as there may be items that have both monetary and sentimental value, or NOT. If you are fortunate enough to find one or two pieces in that category, then you need to decide what to do with them. Even finding a piece or two with sentimental value only - something you had long forgotten about it -- will be a wonderful discovery.

Once the Treasure Hunt is complete and the "stuff" has been categorized what happens now? Stay tuned, more in May!
