Newsletter Submissions
This month's newsletter is the beginning of a new era.  The PTC Executive Board has decided on an email blast format for the Saxe monthly Newsletter, that will provide current information to our parents in a more convenient, cost effective and "green" way.   We are using Constant Contact to create and send these mail blasts to our families.  We would love your comments and suggestions as we move forward with this endeavor.  The newsletter is a supplement to our Saxe PTC website, which is continually updated with the latest PTC information.  We hope you will visit the site often for the most current information.

Just a few reminders:

  • The Saxe Evening Open Houses will be on October 6th for 5th Grade families, October 7th for 6th Grade families and October 8th for 7th and 8th Grade families. Looking forward to seeing you there!
  • It's not too late, but you must join the PTC in order to receive a 2009-2010 PTC student directory. Avoid long lines at the Open Houses, sign up online or by mailThe directories will be distributed at the Open Houses next week.
  • Magazine Drive is our largest fundraiser (providing over 50% of our PTC income for the year) and is crucial to the success of our programs and services.  The Fall Fundraiser kicks off on October 2nd, please support our school through magazine purchases or by making a donation instead.

Warmly,
Maria Weingarten, Saxe PTC President

It's that time of year again! Our fall fundraising initiative to benefit the Saxe PTC is well under way.  This year we are offering TWO easy ways for you to support the Saxe PTC.
  • As in the past, Saxe students will be selling magazines to friends and family.   40% of all proceeds will go to the Saxe PTC. Order Magazines Online Now
  • Or, families can make a direct donation to the PTC.  100% of all proceeds will go to the PTC. Make an Online Donation
Both types of participation will enable students to be eligible to receive prizes during the drive.

Visit the Saxe PTC website to learn more about the fundraising drive. You can submit your handwritten order in the main lobby or lower lobby at Saxe.  In order to be eligible for prizes, please submit your orders by October 14th.

The many programs, services, and events run by the Saxe PTC rely on your support each year.  Thank you to everyone for your participation.  We look forward to a happy and successful year for our Saxe students.

World Language News
¡Hola! Salvete! Bonjour!

The World Language Department is excited to introduce our newest teachers Christine Young (Latin), Rosana Casais (Spanish) and Kathleen Caffrey (Spanish). We look forward to their energy and ideas they will bring to our Saxe family. Starting off the year,  Latin students got to dress up in togas for their traditional name induction ceremony, "dies lustricus", French students are preparing for an exciting field trip to see "French Reflections and Inca Vibrations" at the Theater of the Performing Arts in November, and 7th grade Spanish students are exploring the market vs. the supermarket. All students are encouraged to use the internet for supplemental support and practice in their languages. The following are recommended websites for your child.

Process for Private School Applications
and Recommendations

Grade 8

It's that time of year!  In the next several weeks, parents and students may begin the process of seeking teacher recommendations for private school placement for the school year 2010-2011.

In order to assist families with this process, we have outlined what you will need to do as it relates to Saxe and the staff here.  Additional information on each component of the process is outlined below.
  1. Submit a Records Release Form and transcript requests to Irene Picchione in the Upper Division Office.
  2. Request teacher and counselor recommendations from the student's teachers and counselor.
The following guidelines have been established and should be followed:

A Record Release Form (available on-line at the Saxe website under Grade 8 or in the Upper Division Office) must be completed.  If a student is applying to more than one school, please attach a list of schools and complete addresses to which you are releasing records.  Forms should be turned in to Irene Picchione, Grade 8 Secretary, at your earliest convenience.

Process for requesting teacher recommendations:

All recommendations should be placed in a pocket folder with your child's name on it.

All student information should be filled out at the top of each form.

Each form should be included in the folder listing the schools and the due dates of the recommendations.

Recommendations should be given to teachers 3-4 weeks prior to the date they are due.

Stamped, addressed envelopes should be attached for each recommendation for the Math and English teacher.  Please put the teacher's last name and the Saxe address as the return address (468 South Avenue) on the envelopes.

Counselor/Principal recommendation envelopes usually need three stamps, and we prefer that they be unattached, as sometimes we have to use our own envelope.

Since schools want a copy of the first marking period report card, the Division Office begins to prepare transcripts after the Thanksgiving Holiday.

HSM High School Musical
5th and 6th Grade Musical

We hope this is "Start of Something New" as the 5th / 6th Grade Musical is "Breaking Free" from past years' musicals.  So if you haven't guessed yet, we are thrilled to announce this year's 5th & 6th Grade Musical will be a play based on "High School Musical".  Show times are:

Friday, November 13 at 7:00 pm
Saturday, November 14 at 2:00 pm

A bright and talented cast of almost 80 students will sing, dance and act their way through this hour and a half show.  The well-loved Mr. Ted Thomas returns to direct and choreograph the show along with our talented musical director, Mr. Joe Gergle.  Live music will accompany much of the show thanks to Mr. Gergle and several of the gifted high school musicians!  Last, but certainly not least, Ms. Maggie Pennoyer and her crew will enchant us all with their wonderful sets and props.  For those of you still interested in joining the crew or production team, there's still time to sign up.

With more than a dozen popular songs from High School Musical, the show will have you "Bop(ping) to the Top".  This is one show you won't want to miss so please mark your calendars for this entertaining event!  "We're Counting on You" to show your support and make this a HIT.  Ticket information will be made available soon.

From the Nurse's Office
Changes to CT State Immunization Requirements

6TH Graders
Connecticut State Law requires ALL students to have a Physical exam during sixth grade.  The Blue Health Form needs to be on file in the nurse's office by the last day of 6th grade.

7TH Graders
The State Department of Health has confirmed that the immunization requirements for entry to 7th grade :
  • 2 Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccines
  • A second dose of  Varicella
  • A dose of  Tdap
These forms were sent to all 6th graders in June of this year.  Upon completion of the exam, which usually coincides with the students birthday, send the blue form to the Nurses office.  We accept physicals from June of 09 until June of 10.  Your child will not be permitted to begin 7th grade without this on file.

Latex Allergy Alert:  Saxe is a LATEX FREE school to protect any students with a life threatening latex allergy. NO LATEX GLOVES, NO BALLOONS, NO KOOSH BALLS... Anywhere or anytime. These items are particularly dangerous because they can cause the latex particles to become airborne. We use only vinyl gloves and only mylar balloons. Thanks for your cooperation in keeping our school safe for all our students.

Food Allergy Alert: Please remember that ALL Field Trips at Saxe are Nut Free.

Flu Information
This year in addition to seasonal flu we have concerns about H1N1 flu. This flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus.  It can cause mild to severe illness.

How to Avoid the Flu
  • Get a  flu shot. The CDC recommends flu shots for ALL children 6 months to 18 years.  Children are a pivotal point of transmission for spread of flu.
  • This year in addition to the seasonal flu shot, there is the H1N1 vaccine for children at risk.  Consult your doctor about this vaccine.
  • Handwashing is an excellent means of prevention.  Keep your hands away from your face.  Germs enter through your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Cough Etiquette includes covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing or sneezing into your sleeve.
  •  Avoid close contact with sick people, stay home from work/school when you are ill.
  • Stay home until you are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine.
How Flu spreads
The flu spreads by respiratory droplets released by an infected person coughing or sneezing. This is why it is so vital that we all cover our mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.  It usually spreads from person to person, though occasionally touching something with virus on it and then touching their nose or mouth may infect a person.

Symptoms & Complications of Flu are: fever, headache, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, dry cough, and joint pain.

Some complications caused by the flu include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes.  Children may develop sinus and ear infections.

Please do not send your child to school if she/he has a fever or is ill. We need your help to keep our school healthy.

Flu Vaccine Clinic postponed... link to the Town of New Canaan website for the latest information about H1N1.

Board of Education News
September 2009
Opening day throughout the district went very smoothly according to Dr. David Abbey in his annual start of year report at the 9/8/09 BOE meeting.  Teachers spent the summer building curriculum and readying their rooms. Facilities and technology staff also had everything in great shape. And even the new opt-in bus program did not cause the anticipated chaos.  A new language program at the elementary schools is up and running.  Basketball courts are ready to be installed at Saxe. At the High School a new trail is in place for easy access from the school to South Avenue.  Dr. Abbey also commented on President Obama's speech to students, citing its important message and good concepts. The speech was available in real time for some students at Saxe and NCHS.   He detailed plans for age appropriate future use in all the schools. "From the outside of the building in we are doing just fine," he said in closing.

Dr. Steve Swerdlick provided the Enrollment report stating we are close to projected numbers across the district and have very few classes over the district guidelines.  Saxe currently has 1216 students. Enrollment at the High School is 1295. The district total is 4039.

The Board is also in the initial stages of reviewing the policy on Student Activity Accounts at NCHS.  While the BOE believes the accounts are a good idea they need to monitor how funds are raised and spent.

Dr. Mike Lagas presented the financial report, noting spending is on track.

On 9/21/09 Facilities Director Hans Otto presented an update of energy initiatives that will be completed within the next 12 months.  CL & P has indicated rebates for the updates will be given to NCPS.  The improvements will be funded by the town and will not impact the BOE budget.

Computers for Kids
The Computers for Kids Program is beginning its 11th year! A wonderful staff of volunteers takes donated computers and refurbishes them. We then give them to students, staff or community members who need a computer for home use but cannot buy one right now. If you know someone in need of a working computer, please contact Patty Potts.

Please also contact me if you have a computer or flat screen monitor to donate. We need donations!

Lastly, we collect empty ink cartridges and recycle them to raise money for printers. Please bring empty ink cartridges to the Lower Division Office at Saxe.

This program only succeeds because of the hard work of volunteers Julius and Emi Alexander, Eric Glerum, the Picard family, Cathy Swan and the NCHS Tech Team, the patience of Lin Benware and Brenda Carmichael, and, of course, the generosity of our wonderful Saxe community.

Thank you!
