UPDATE ON STREET SIGN REPLACEMENT DEADLINES
According to a source at the US Department of Transportation, the January 2012 deadline for street sign upgrades will be extended under the proposed amendment filed last week. State and local governments will have two more years after the effective date of the amended rules to implement an assessment or management method for maintaining sign retroreflectivity at or above minimum levels as required in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. State and local road agencies may seek funding assistance to help defray some of the costs related to ensuring sign retroreflectivity from the State Planning and Research Program, Community Safety Grants, and the Highway Safety Improvement Program. For more information abou the proposed changes and how to submit comments, visit the US Department of Transportation website.
