Whether you have a plot in a community garden, your own back yard, a rooftop herb patch, a fire escape that's plumb for planting or a window box that needs some new inhabitants, Greenmarket Farmers Markets and Greenmarket Wholesale Market have your urban gardening needs covered. From decorative hanging baskets, to edible pots of nasturtiums and a terrific selection of vegetable and herb starts, ask your farmer how to make your garden grow. The Lower East Side Ecology Center sells potting soil and compost at the Union Square Greenmarket and you can always use EBT/Food Stamps to purchase edible plants. While you water and wait for the baby greens to bolt, make sure to stop and smell the lilacs, peonies and tulips from Greenmarket's exceptional flower vendors.

Greenmarket's Youth Education Project: Classroom UpdateGreenmarket's Youth Education Project is introducing its Seed to Plate curriculum this spring to fifth and sixth graders at three schools in Brooklyn and the Bronx. The ten-lesson curriculum uses fun, engaging activities to teach students about regional agriculture, healthy eating, farmers markets, and cooking. The lessons, designed in collaboration with Teachers College at Columbia University, include field trips to the Greenmarket and the Randall's Island Learning Garden, classroom visits from a Greenmarket farmer as well as a local chef, and hands-on preparation of delicious, seasonal snacks. Purchase a ticket for Taste of Greenmarket, and support the expansion of Seed to Plate to additional schools in the fall. |
