Greenmarket Dirt
February 2012

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, Mark Bittman once wrote an ode to short ribs, noting that there is nothing that says 'I love you,' like a long, slow-braised short rib. If you're looking for ways to please your honey, we might add that in addition to short ribs, you can pick up fresh-cut flowers at your neighborhood Greenmarket. When it comes to baking sweets for your sweetie, look no further than local flour, and thanks to the unseasonably warm weather, we've been happy to announce the early return of Dutchmill Gardens with their buckets of gorgeous tulips. Like Ella sings, 'It might as well be spring.' Happy Valentine's Day! Love, Greenmarket

Compost to Continue at Greenmarkets

In Search of a New Tagline GrowNYC, Greenmarket's parent organization, is in search of a new tagline. In addition to operating farmers markets throughout the boroughs, GrowNYC's other programs provide recycling education, upkeep of community gardens, and environmental education to city schoolchildren. Update on Hurricane Donations
Thanks to an outpouring of support from shoppers, community members, chefs and restaurants, we are thrilled to announce that GrowNYC raised over $85,000 to aid Greenmarket farmers hardest hit by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee this past September. A committee was established to administer and review a short application, and a portion of the funds have already been distributed to the 20+ farmers who qualified (see the full list of awardees here). For all of you who generously donated, thank you-- Greenmarket's farmers are already making preparations for a better year ahead.
