Hurricane Irene Relief

Just as our farmers were preparing to harvest the cornucopia from their fields in late August, along came Irene whose high winds and rain wiped out fields and left acres of farmland underwater for about 30 of our 230 producers.  We look forward to September all year -- and even after Irene, the market will continue to boast a full range of regional produce--from the plumpest heirloom tomatoes and sweet summer corn, to grapes and the first squash of the fall.

See photos of some of the damage here

As the hard-hit farmers assess the damage in the days and weeks ahead, we encourage you to visit your neighborhood Greenmarket and show your support by filling your shopping bags. Fittingly, NOFA-NY has planned their annual Locavore Challenge for the month of September, encouraging eaters across the state to commit to eating entirely locally produced food for 30 days. Sign up to take the challenge

We have also set up a relief pagecomplete with information on how to donate funds to support Greenmarket farmers, upcoming benefits to attend, and details about what farms are in need of volunteers. The outpouring of concern from customers and neighbors has been so encouraging in the days following the storm, and as we continue to learn about the extent of the damage in our area, we will keep the community informed about ways to help.

Speakers include Jessamyn Waldman of Hot Bread Kitchen, Thor Oeschner of Farmer Ground Flour, Gable Erenzo of Tuthilltown Spirits Distillers and will be moderated by Ian Cheney, co-creator of King Corn. A tasting of popcorn, corn whiskey and corn-centric snacks will follow the discussion.
