"I Am All Alone": Pioneer Diary Book Release and Signing Sept. 26, 9AM-12PM, The Discovery Center
The Wasco County Historical Museum Press and author Boris J. Smith will present a new book: "I Am All Alone - The Diary of Mary Swasey Evans, Early Mosier Settler."
One hundred years ago this week, pioneer Evans left this world, and her journal, behind. Doris J. Smith has transcribed the hand-written pages, enriched them with thoughtful passages of introduction and conclusion, and added newspaper articles from The Dalles Optimist, The Mosier Bulletin, and the Hood River Glacier, which beautifully compliment events in the journal.
Together, the reader understands the tapestry of life in the Gorge in 1910: both the simple rhythm of the daily chores of a fruit grower's wife, and the intriguing intellectual and economic climate of the turn-of-the-century.
"We hope I Am All Alone will become a local classic that both adults and high school readers will enjoy, to better understand their pre-technological roots," says Roxandra Pennington of the Discovery Center. "It documents the development of transportation, communication, and agriculture in the Gorge, climate change, the state of medical care, and the fascinating creativity with which people entertained themselves."
"I Am All Alone" is available exclusively at the Columbia River Trading Company located at the Discovery Center and Museum.

"A dollar spent at a locally owned store is usually
spent 6-15 times before it leaves the community. From $1, you create $5-$14 in
value within your community."
"Spend $1 at a national chain store and
80% of it leaves town immediately."
