The trail is paved and handicap-accessible. Guide will continue off-trail on a moderately-sloped descent down to the scenic banks of the Columbia River.

"I Am All Alone": Pioneer Diary
Book Release and Signing

Sept. 26, 9AM-12PM, The Discovery Center

The Wasco County Historical Museum Press and author Boris J. Smith will present a new book: "I Am All Alone - The Diary of Mary Swasey Evans, Early Mosier Settler."

One hundred years ago this week, pioneer Evans left this world, and her journal, behind. Doris J. Smith has transcribed the hand-written pages, enriched them with thoughtful passages of introduction and conclusion, and added newspaper articles from The Dalles Optimist, The Mosier Bulletin, and the Hood River Glacier, which beautifully compliment events in the journal.

Together, the reader understands the tapestry of life in the Gorge in 1910: both the simple rhythm of the daily chores of a fruit grower's wife, and the intriguing intellectual and economic climate of the turn-of-the-century.

"We hope I Am All Alone will become a local classic that both adults and highschool readers will enjoy, to better understand their pre-technological roots," says Roxandra Pennington of the Discovery Center. "It documents the development of transportation, communication, and agriculture in the Gorge, climate change, the state of medical care, and the fascinating creativity with which people entertained themselves."

"I Am All Alone" is available exclusively at the Columbia River Trading Company located at the Discovery Center and Museum.

"Real talk -- no agendas"

Starting October 5th, listen for the new "Talk of the Gorge" program, airing Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-10:30AM.

Rodger Nichols, whose radio career began in 1966 at KIHR in Hood River, and who anchored a number of episodes of the long-running "Coffee Break" program on KODL (1978-1986), will host a lively half-hour of local political & community interviews.

The format allows time to explore issues in-depth, promote local events & give people with interesting stories a chance to tell them to a wider audience. The tone of the program is informational rather than confrontational. All guests will be treated with respect.

For more information and/or ideas, contact Rodger Nichols at: 541.206.9102 ext. 312
