Greetings!

TigerI always enjoy seeing our VNN members and the media that they do.  .

Dr. Bert Gaddis, a VNN member in Alabama, was featured in a local news story after he performed a root canal on a Malayan Tiger at the Birmingham Zoo.  Prior to the advent of "new", "emerging" or "social" media, many of us would not have known about this unless Dr. Gaddis took the time to send us all copies.  This is what makes our job so fun!

Dr. Jim and I can help promote the great work you are doing even though we may be 10, 100 or 1000 miles away from your practice.  Let us know when you have excitement like this happening and we will make sure we share with our entire social network.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News
As I am prNewspaper Bundleeparing this newsletter today, I can't help but note the number of dog attack cases that news sources are highlighting on Facebook.  As you are all aware, most media will take any chance they get to report or even sensationalize dog bite and dog attack cases.  I was very glad to see our member, Brent Toellner of @KCDogBlog discuss a "near miss" case in his recent blog.  It reminds me that all of us should be doing whatever we can to reach out through the media and help educate both pet owners and people without dogs on the very basics of avoiding dog bites.   You can find story resources on dog bites at MyVNN.com.  All of this is very timely as Dog Bite Prevention Week is upcoming.

Another interesting topic that could make a good blog is the release of Banfield's "State of Pet Health, 2012".  After reviewing more than 2 million dog records and almost 1/2 million cat records, the folks at Banfield have made some interesting conclusions about our companion animals' health.  One interesting stat is that feline obesity is up 90% since 2006.  Although it's not anything fancy, we did do a short blog at VetNewsOnline on this topic.

Diamond Dog Foods continue to have issues from one plant in SC.  Three different brands have now been recalled due to Salmonella contamination.  For pocket pet owners, Kaytee has recalled some of their Forti-Diet foods as well.

Any easy way
to keep up with important animal health or veterinary news is to "Like" our Veterinary News Network Facebook page.  Daily posts will help keep you up to date and recommendations for using VNN resources will occur routinely as well!  If you are more interested in a private setting to discuss media stories affecting the veterinary profession, join our VNN Linked In Group.

As I have mentioned many times, dealing with Facebook as a way to market your practice can be a bit challenging.  The new Timeline format has a lot of people confused.   Never fear...I found some helpful tips to make sure you don't run afoul of some little known Facebook rule!

First, although it may seem far fetched and unlikely to happen to your Page, you need to know that businesses have had their pages removed or shut down for violating Facebook's Terms of Use (Terms of Service, Terms and Conditions).  Often, the page is unknowingly sponsoring some sort of contest or even trying to help a charity.   Facebook does NOT like this and will remove the page.  Here is an example from a New Zealand company, Hell's Pizza, that was simply trying to donate money to a charity based on people "liking" their page.  They had over 20,000 "likes" when their page was lost...can YOU afford to lose the likes you have generated on your page to date?

It's also important to note, even though you are legally running some sort of contest or promotion through a third party app, you must include a disclaimer that the promotion is in no way affiliated with Facebook.  This holds true for any sort of data collection that you might do as well.

Next, with the new Timeline format, you have a great opportunity to highlight your practice with the Cover Photo.  This picture should be about 851 pixels by 315 pixels.   More importantly, it CAN NOT include any contact details, pricing information, any call to action to "like", "tell your friends" or "share" the page and, of course, the image has to be yours.   Here are some pages that have  violated these precepts.  Bottom line, don't use the cover image as an advertisement.

Finally, don't neglect the "About" section on your Facebook page.  This is an area where you can add important keywords that will help the search engines find you and your practice more efficiently.

About Tab on FB Business Page

By clicking on the "About" link below the description, you can edit what your visitors see.   You should definitely have your website in this blurb as well as important keywords (veterinarian, your city and state, dogs, cats, etc).  Furthermore, there is a LOT of space for you to add even more detail that your followers will see when they click on that About link.

Let me know if you have any questions about how your Facebook page is proceeding.
