Greetings!

I am looking forward to connecting with VNN members and friends over at the Oregon VMA meeting next week.  If you are in the area, I will be discussing traditional and social media on Friday (3/16).

THEN...both Dr.Jim and I will be presenting at AAHA's Annual meeting on Sunday, March 18th.   We would love to see any of our members stop by for some media training!

Crazy week weather-wise...anyone thinking that spring is just around the corner yet??

By the way...THANK YOU!  Our recent membership renewal drive has been a great success!!  Out of 199 members who had renewal dates over the last 3 months, 183 have renewed!!  That's over 90%!!!  Thank you so much for your continued trust in VNN!
If you know someone who is interested in using any sort of media to reach out and educate clients/market their practice and they aren't yet a member of VNN...tell them to apply at MyVNN.com.  You will be helping them AND you will get a credit towards your next's year's membership fees!!  Win-Win!!

Some of you might be seeing or hearing about rumors concerning a specific lot of canned food under the Kirkland label.  Kirkland is a Costco house brand that is produced by American Nutrition, Inc in Utah.  Internet gossip says that this lot of Lamb and Rice cans is sickening many dogs and deaths have been reported.  UNFORTUNATELY, at this time, we can not confirm ANY of this misinformation.  The postings and comments made all direct back to a single email shared on a forum site at the beginning of March.  This posting was then copied and pasted to lots of other breed forums and pet related site.  I have spoken with American Nutrition and they relate that there is just one case that is currently under investigation and they have no other reports of illnesses at this time.  So, in order NOT to fuel continued speculation, we have opted NOT to post anything in our social network or send any kind of "breaking news alert".   If things change we will keep you updated through our network and/or text message service.

In legislative news, the Connecticut Senate is dealing with a bill that would change their recent legislation designed to provide additional regulation on shelters and rescues that import dogs into their state.  SB 253 eliminates a 48 hour window for mandatory veterinary exam.  Our own, Dr. Arnold Goldman of Canton, CT has been testifying about this proposal.  This is an interesting turn of events given that a recent case of canine distemper that was imported into the state of Massachusetts has received a lot of attention.

TornadoWe are hearing both sad and heartwarming stories coming out of the devastation after the severe winter storms that crossed the US last week.  Entire herds of horses have been lost, but there are also cases of pets surviving and being reunited with their families.  As we get ready for spring, it's also a great time to dust off the Disaster Preparedness Message Points and use them in your media outreach!

Any easy way to keep up with important animal health or veterinary news is to "Like" our Veterinary News Network Facebook page.  Daily posts will help keep you up to date and recommendations for using VNN resources will occur routinely as well!  If you are more interested in a private setting to discuss media stories affecting the veterinary profession, join our VNN Linked In Group.

Uh-oh!  Facebook Changes are Happening Again!

You may or may not have noticed that your Facebook Business page will be changing at the end of this month.  Last week, Facebook rolled out their Timeline for business pages to complement the Timeline feature for personal profiles.

So...what's the change?

First, and certainly most noticeable, will be the addition of a cover picture that will appear almost like a banner across the top of your page. This picture will be automatically sized up to 850x315, so make sure that your chosen image is robust enough to look good when it is scaled larger.

FB Timeline Cover pic

Next, there will be your thumbnail image that appears next to each of your posts.  This image will be 180x180...this is a good place for your logo if it fits well as a square image.

Like the personal profiles Timeline, your business page posts will be in chronological order.  The posts will generally switch back and forth between the left and right sides of the timeline.  HOWEVER, if you would like to "highlight" a post, you can expand the size of the post to cross both sides of the timeline.

Facebook timeline

There is also the ability to "pin" your posts to the top of your timeline (similar to the "sticky" function in most forums) but this function will cease after one week.

Because of the chronological order, you can actually add many milestones for your business into the timeline.  Simply click on the timeline that runs down the middle of your page and you can add important events, like the founding of your hospital, purchases of new equipment, open houses, etc.

The applications that used to show up along the left hand side of your page are now listed under your cover picture and only the top four are shown (although the user can expand the list).  These can easily be re-ordered by clicking on the edit pencil in the upper right corner of the desired app and swapping the position with another application.

Finally, for now, there is an expandable administration section that will give you snapshots of you is interacting with your page, your new "likes", Insights and even a message center where people can reach out to you.  This section actually appears ABOVE your cover picture and can be hidden from view.

I am sure that you or your social media person might have some thoughts, questions or concerns.  Please feel free to connect with me and let me know how VNN can help!

As mentioned last week, our latest VNN video story was released.  Many of you have heard about new research looking at ways to help people and pets with spinal cord injuries and our story can help keep you in the loop.  This is exciting, ground-breaking research that has a lot of potential for minimizing damage after trauma to the spinal cord and increasing the possibility of recovery.   Here's the video if you haven't seen it:

March is also National Kidney Month.  With the help of VNN members from the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego, we have some Message Points on Kidney Disease in Pets available online for your use.

Remember that March 18th-24th is National Animal Poison Prevention Week.  Watch for notice of our newly developed messaging on top pet poisons from the ASPCA Poison Control coming soon!

Finally, a good portion of our members received a text message last week informing them of our newest release.  If you haven't already subscribed to our Text Message Alert Service, simply text "VNN" to 85378.  If your phone is already in our database, you will receive a confirmation text.  If your cell is NOT in our database, you will receive a text asking for your name.  It's really simple and it can keep YOU up to date!
