Dear VNN Member:
The month of October has a lot of excitement for our members as well as a lot of ideas for getting your message out through media!
National Veterinary Technician Week is Oct 9th through the 15th and you can use the media to help your clients/community understand the importance of technicians (as well as giving them some public recognition for their hard work!).
October is also Adopt a Shelter Dog month. If you work with your local rescues and shelters, this is a good time to work together, promote adoptions and the proper care of these wonderful pets!
Don't miss out on our upcoming Facebook webinar on Monday October 17th. Full details are listed below.

Animals, Veterinarians and VNN Members in the News This Week |
When most of us here those immortal words, "Git 'er done", we automatically start looking around for something funny to happen. But, VNN Member, Dr. Melanie Marsden recently got to spend some time with comedic star, Larry the Cable Guy, doing some less than amusing tasks - neutering a few BIG cats! Dr. Marsden was interviewed and videoed for an upcoming airing of Larry's new show, Only in America, airing on the History Channel. The show is supposed to air in January or February and we will keep YOU posted! Congrats Dr M!
Up north, Dr. Jeff Latimer continues his great work in local media, generating columns for two newspapers in his area. In this article on animal ERs, Dr. Latimer uses a combination of VNN resources along with some fantastic local flavor. Thanks Dr. Latimer...wonderful job!
Many of you, as well as many pet owners, are dealing with cases of allergies in pets. We have resources available at MyVNN.com on allergies in general as well as atopy specifically. This is a timely subject as the seasons start to change.
For routine updates on newsworthy stories and potential social media items, make sure you and your hospital follow our Veterinary News Network Facebook page. Many of these stories can be found on our "Wall".

Key Reasons to Start or Increase Your Social Media Presence
|
Dr. Jim Humphries Veterinary News Network
As if we all don't know this, it is often good to have a company like Nielsen do a study to affirm for all of us key points. Recently one study showed some very interesting facts about social media and business and here are a few that should help your practice.
As you know, Tom and I stand ready to help you. We have a great Facebook Webinar coming up soon so be sure to attend. We also know you are very pressed for time and this has to be simple and easy. That is one of the great benefits of VNN - we research and write content for media of all types. You take that content and make it your own, or simply repost, retweet, or even take the time to give your opinion on a blog or client newsletter. Either way, VNN is here to save you time, and help market your practice through content and client education.
First, we do know that most American consumers spend the majority of their time (3X more than email) on social media sites and reading blogs. This is great news as what we provide you is content for all this. So... if you're not building your hospital or personal profiles on social networks you are getting behind every day.
Also, successful online practice sites have blogs. They're great for communication, evergreen content and even search engine optimization. But we know you just don't have the time to populate a blog every week. Again, one of the best ways we can help you.
I recently had to have a crown fitted for a cracked molar. My online shopping experience to find the right dentist was very telling. Not only do 70% of adult online users shop online, but the buying experience needs to lead them to your door. So many local dentists were either NOT online, or they did not have a site that invited me, informed me, or educated me. When I did call a few, I eliminated several entirely based on the uninviting way I was treated on the phone.
Not to get off subject here, but your online presence is step one in this "path to purchase", and that means your site must be found. Be sure to see our video on Findability at MyVNN.com.
Next interesting fact in this Nielsen study was that more than half of all adults follow a brand. That means brand loyalty and we also know people are more likely to buy when they see a recommendation from a friend or peer. Wow! You really need to be 'branding' your hospital!
Then do not forget, these active and involved users will write reviews of you and your hospital, so your off line relationship should be even better than your on line one. A great staff from the front door to the back will cause clients to rave about you online and friends will give you a try. The value of this (and not spending actual money to enjoy this type of high value marketing) is amazing. With just a little attention it can be yours.
Finally don't forget, mobile internet users are up dramatically. That means they can recommend you (or slam you) from their car in your parking lot. All the more reason for good client service, communications and experience to be outstanding each and every time!
What does all this mean for you? You need a strong presence in social media or blogging (or both) and the be sure that is followed with an outstanding in person experience so you can take advantage of not just the Internet, but the immediacy of happy client's recommendations and the friends of friends coming in your front door.

Upcoming Events and Reminders |
 | Protecting Your Pet's Vision - Veterinary Ophthalmology |
If you haven't seen it already, please take a look at our most recent video release, Protecting Your Pet's Vision - Veterinary Ophthalmology. Special thanks goes out to the ACVO for their help in providing some excellent b-roll footage for this story. This should be a great way to educate your clients and your community about the delicate nature of our pets' eyes. On Saturday, October 1st, VNN is proud to release our next video story which will focus on cats and the fact that they receive less preventive care than our canine buddies.
On Monday, October 17th, we are extremely excited to welcome back Internet business and marketing guru, Mr. Kevin Knebl. Kevin will be providing another hour long webinar specifically for our VNN members. The topic for this webinar is using Facebook for your business. Given all the changes Facebook has gone through recently, this is definitely a "don't miss" presentation. You can register for the webinar here or simply log in to MyVNN.com and follow the link on the My News Desk page.
Halloween is now a mere 30 days away...what are your plans for reaching out to the media?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM VNN!
| |
Starting on or around the 18th of October, I will be reaching out to all of our members for updates on your media work and to find out what you need/desire/want from membership in VNN.
Things to be thinking about before that phone call might include: stories you would like to see VNN tackle, questions that you have about using our resources (especially our videos) and what other items VNN can provide for you to make marketing your practice through the media easier.
In addition, we will also release an online survey for our members. Links to this survey will be posted in next week's News Alert and several emails between now and the end of the year.
Remember, this is YOUR organization and we want you to succeed. Let Dr. Jim or I know your expectations and needs and we will both do our best to provide the very best in informative, educational and easy to use resources.
THANK YOU! |
FACEBOOK DID WHAT??
| Millions of Facebook fanatics had a collective heart attack recently as the social media giant starting rolling out changes to the NewsFeed and even a brand new look for personal profiles.
What happened subsequently definitely proves that people are resistant to change of any sort!!
Updates claiming Facebook would not start charging members or that your phone numbers are now available to anyone or even steps that you can take to "change things back" starting flying around the site at the speed of light.
As we have repeatedly mentioned, all of us at VNN monitor the bigger social sites for changes and potential issues just like these. We will definitely let you know if there is reason for concern and let you know how to handle it.
Don't buy into the the panic of "clicking your friends page to remove comments/likes from your page" type of memes. They are simply not true!
More changes are coming, including changes to the Facebook Business Pages. Just remember to stay calm and ask us if you have questions or concerns.
Personally, I like the newsfeed changes...I have pruned my "friends list" and pages that I like drastically! |

INTERESTING AND HELPFUL BLOGS
| |
Keeping up with the ever changing world of animal health is enough of a challenge without needing to constantly update your knowledge on social media, new media or other technological advances. Of course, here at VNN, that's what we do! We are your eyes and ears into the fast paced world of news and blogging. BUT...if you would like to find a few GOOD bloggers to follow, check out these suggestions: Are you a proponent of evidence based medicine? This blog, written by a member of the , takes a hard look at many controversial topics in veterinary medicine. I personally love the fact that almost every blog has 5-10 references in it. Many of you are familiar with Dr. Scott Weese. He does a great job of reviewing news articles on infectious diseases in our animals and breaking out the facts from the rumors. If you have heard me speak on social media, you have heard of Peter Shankman. This blog will help you remember that the focus on all that we do through any media needs to be on our clients, not on the number of people following us. This wonderful lady from Scotland is a blessing when it comes to sorting through all the changes in many of the social sites. She has a great way of putting rumors to rest and sharing the best practices for marketing your business on Facebook.
