Dear VNN Member:

Statue of LibertyIt's hard to believe that 10 years ago tragic events occurred that have forever changed how we work, how we travel and so many aspects of our daily lives.  Like all of you, I can remember EXACTLY where I was on that fateful day.  And, like many others all across the country and the world, I will be taking a moment to remember all the victims and the heroes of that day, including the four-legged heroes.

If your local media is doing any sort of special about the 9-11 commemoration, you might consider pitching them a story focused on the efforts of the search and rescue dogs, military working dogs or explosive detection dogs.

Veterinarian and assistant with dogIn the spirit of the 9-11 commemoration, a new study was recently released in which 95 search and rescue canines were evaluated for health issues post 9-11.   The results show that these magnificent animals did NOT develop the common respiratory issues seen in many of the human responders and workers.  Great news indeed!

Fall is often a big season for fleas and ticks...just because the weather is starting to turn a little cooler doesn't mean we are out of danger from these pests yet!  As you can see, blog postings about ticks or news stories about fleas can be a good way to educate clients AND promote your practice/expertise.

Cat smileSeptember is also Happy Cat Month!  Helping keep our feline friends frisky is a blog-worthy topic (as Dr. Deb Eldredge shows us) and could also pique the interest of your local media.  Develop some messaging on "cat friendly" tips and pass them on to your media contacts.  Need help with messaging?  Just give us a call or email and we would be happy to assist you!

For routine updates on newsworthy stories and potential social media items, make sure you and your hospital follow our Veterinary News Network Facebook page.  Many of these stories can be found on our "Wall".

Are Your Fans "Seeing" Your Posts and Updates?

Tom Dock - Reporter Relations Manager, VNN

I have mentioned in many previous posts here that the goal of social media is not to get thousands of people to follow you, but to use the tool as a means of brining people into your clinic.

That said, how do you know if the updates, pictures and stories you are posting on your Facebook page are making it to the News Feeds of your fans?

According to Mari Smith, a well-known Facebook expert, almost 90% of people who "like" your page never actually return to it.   All of the interaction that they do with you is done from their own News Feed.   So, it is very important that your posts show up regularly in their News Feed and that they encourage participation and interaction with you.

First, you must understand that 30 BILLION pieces of content are shared on Facebook every month.   How are you going to be seen with all of that noise?  These following tips can help optimize your updates so that your fans will be more likely to see your postings.

1)    Less is more!  Although you might think that posting more often will encourage more interaction, this type of activity actually can cause people to hide your posts in their feed or even unlike your page altogether.  Best practice?   Try to post about 2-5 times daily.

2)    Less is still more!  Don't post LONG postings or updates.  Studies have shown that updates with 80 characters or less actually get more engagement than longer posts.

3)    Don't focus solely on status updates and links...try posting pictures, videos or even simple questions.  You might need to experiment a little, but in most cases, pictures and videos seem to have better engagement rates.

4)    When posting links, use the full link instead of a link that has been shortened by a URL shortening app.   Three times as many people will interact with a full link as compared to interactions with shortened links

5)    Time of day and the days of week are also important.  Most interactions occur between 10 am and 4 pm Eastern time.  Thursdays and Fridays are also more interactive days.  So, consider saving some of your REALLY key updates (like an Open House announcement, etc) for those times.

6)    Finally, when posting on Facebook, consider posting manually on Facebook as opposed to using a third party app like TweetDeck, HootSuite, PingFM or others.  Although these apps are a time saving device for you, Facebook gives a lower "weight" to updates done through this apps and thus it might be less likely to show up in your fan's News Feeds.

How will you know if you are succeeding?  Monitor your Facebook insights and see what postings are gaining the most interactions for you.  Remember, a higher interaction rate means that your posts are being seen by more people and will stay "relevant" for a longer period of time.  Try to reproduce the type of postings that encourage engagement from your followers.

Some of you might be tempted to use an outside source for keeping up with your social media efforts.  Although the reasoning (time) is understandable, most of these social media "companies" do not fully understand your business or your clients.  I have real life examples of VNN members who tried that route and actually LOST significant numbers of fans from their pages.   It's always best to keep your social media updates in house when you can.  If you need help...ask us first.   We can help guide you to effective and efficient ways to stay on top of social media without potentially losing the base of followers you have worked hard to gain.

Web globe

We broke with tradition on Sept 1st and released a VNN "members only" video and story.  Our "Findability" resource provides you reasons why it's important to be easily found on the web and, more importantly, some tools to help you achieve that result.  The entire Findability article is located in the Media Training Library on the inside of MyVNN.com and here is a link to the video:

Next Thursday, September 15th, we will return to our consumer friendly releases and provide you with a story on Veterinary Ophthalmology.   We all know how important eye care is for our pets and we believe that this video release will help stress that fact to your clients.  Watch for the video release next week!

If you aren't sure how to download and use any of our videos, give either one of us a call and we would be HAPPY to help!

Dr. Jim is on his way to Texas A&M for the next week...he is teaching a class on communications there.  I will be heading out to Keystone, CO for the CVMA Convention 2011.  Not only is VNN providing lectures on traditional media and social media, we are also conducting a Social Media Wet Lab for any interested veterinarians and/or staff members.  It's a great place to sit and discuss your concerns about this new marketing tool.  We will have VNN members, Dr. Dean Vicksman, Dr. Melanie Marsden and Dr. Margot Vahrenwald also on hand to assist and to "social cast" the convention.  Watch the CVMA Convention Facebook page for updates

We now have a new resource at MyVNN.com.  Check out our Perpetual Animal Events Calendar!

VNN Member Blogs and Ideas!

Check this space in every newsletter as we will share great ideas and popular blogs or sites from our VNN members.

We have three excellent examples to share today!

As mentioned in the Animal News section of this newsletter, Dr. Deb Eldredge has taken a timely topic (Happy Cat Month) and turned it into a helpful, education blog.  In fact, she has made it a two part series which will encourage her readers and followers to come back!

This does not have to take a lot of your time or your staff's time.  Look through our VNN Message Point library or the 100+ stories that are archived at MyVNN.com.  Often, you can find an article or messaging that can be quickly edited and posted throughout your social network.

Keeping on top of these types of events and celebrations is just one way to increase your reputation and expertise through social media.  In addition, well-crafted blogs and sharing them through your social media network is also a good way to attract the attention of your local traditional media outlets.

Also showing great timeliness was Dr. Patrick Mahaney with his blog about Hurricane Irene.  Dr. M was actually in Virginia as Irene came ashore and decided to use that event as an opportunity to educate his readers.

As usual, I also found VNN Member, Brent Toellner's blog to be helpful this week.  In this installment, Bent describes an email that he received from a rescue group.  I think this is a great blog posting that highlights how ANY communications that come from an organization need to be client focused, friendly and timely.

Have you listened to your front office staff on the phone recently?  Are they giving any impression of friendliness and customer service?  How about your reminder emails, postcards or text messages?  Do they invite and encourage clients to visit you?

Although VNN exists primarily as a news gathering and production resource, we are also focused on your success in practice.  If your day-to-day practice communications are not client friendly (like the example of the rescue Brent describes), it will be much harder for you to achieve the success that you want. Moreover, isn't it possible that poor communications might actually lead to a lessening of pet care?

REMINDER - VNN Text Message System

VNN Logo

Don't forget that you can opt in to VNN's new text messaging system.  We think that this communication method is ideal for letting you know when breaking animal health news happens.

Don't worry that we will use this system too frequently.  We have designed this so that it is only used for vital news when you need to know what's happening.

If you have not had the opportunity or if you did not see the email, you can join the list by texting "VNN" to 85378 or you can visit www.addacall.com type "VNN" into the search box and input your cell number at that site.

If your cell number is not in our database, you might receive a confirmation text asking for your name.  This is expected and is OK!

As always, we value your time and your privacy.  Your cell number will not be used for any purpose other than VNN communications.

THANK YOU!
