Dear VNN Member:

Thermometer

I sure hope all of you are staying cool and that you aren't inundated with heat stroke cases at your clinics.   About 17 states are experiencing record high temperatures this week and it is taking a toll on people and pets.  Although there is some relief in store for the East, temperatures are going to continue to stay HOT!

We are working hard this weekend to finalize our upcoming Generic Frontline VNN story resource for you!

Animals in the News This Week

Dog at ATMFollowing in the footsteps of the recent Consumer Reports article on pet health care, other news organizations have decided to dive into the discussion.  Thankfully, the newer articles seem a little more balanced, like this one from CNN on senior pet care.

Cost of veterinary care will ALWAYS be a newsworthy topic, so make sure you are prepared.  We have Message Points developed back in 2008 after a stinging report from Los Angeles.  Use the framework of these Message Points and edit/craft them to any current discussions. Focus on the positive things you do every day!

Two police dogs this week were rushed to local veterinarians.  One, Shadow from Terre Haute, IN, was shot in the face while helping a SWAT team serve a warrant.  Sadly, Shadow's partner and handler died in the gunfire exchange.   Another police K9, Badger from Dayton, OH, died after a ball lodged in her throat.  These types of stories make great blogs, especially if you are involved with helping your local law enforcement animals.  Let your local community know!

For routine updates on newsworthy stories and potential social media items, make sure you and your hospital follow our Veterinary News Network Facebook page.  Many of these stories can be found on our "Wall".

Is Your Hospital Blog Working For You?

Tom Dock - Reporter Relations Manager, VNN

Time and time again, we have mentioned that the purpose of engaging in and through any sort of media, but especially social media, is to establish your expertise AND set your hospital up as a professional, yet inviting place for pet owners to bring their pets.  Many of you have jumped right into the social media pool and are trying to use blogs as a means of reaching out and educating people.  So...why aren't more people following your blog?

A recent informal survey of several high profile social media bloggers generated a list of common blogging mistakes.  See if any of these might apply to you:

First, make sure you get the right focus.   Remember, even though many pet owners love details, spending a lot of time using complex medical terminology can make your blog a difficult read.  Similarly, don't try to cover a whole bunch of topics in one blog.  Stick to one particular subject for each blog and remember that some topics (like nutrition) may do better if you divide them up into three or more shorter blogs.

Next, make sure that you establish good practices.   Set up an editorial calendar and try hard to stick to it.  VNN can help you with this with our continually expanding resources.  BUT...at the same point in time, don't throw up a blog that is less than ideal simply because your Outlook Task Manager says it's time.  Your readers will ALWAYS want quality posts over quantity (and the search engines will like that better as well).

It should be understood by all VNN members (who are media savvy and media-trained) that you must pay attention to the details of your writing.  Poor spelling, poor grammar or worse, inaccurate information can be the death of any blog.  Make sure your sources are correct and that your spell checker is "on".

For me, this final point is vital.  Make sure that you engage with your readers and audience.  It does take awhile to build enough of an audience so that people feel comfortable sharing their own thoughts in your space.  BUT...when they do, don't leave them hanging out there in cyberspace.  Engage them even if it's only to say "thanks for commenting".

This article paraphrased great information from a recent entry at the Social Media Examiner site titled: Top 21 Blogging Mistakes.  The original article goes on to discuss using proper search engine optimization (SEO) techniques as well as blogging communities to help promote your work.   BUT...that's a topic for another week!

If you are currently blogging, please make sure that we are aware of it .  We can help share and promote your blog not only to our own membership, but an entire network that we have built in social media.  The added bonus, as some of our members have found out, is that good blogging can lead to gigs in traditional media as well.

ADT Fire Dog

July 15th (tomorrow) is National Pet Fire Safety Day.  Every year, far too many pets die needlessly in house fires and a smaller number actually start the fires in the first place!  This is a great topic that you can use at any time of year, but it fits well now with the national press garnered by ADT and AKC.  Don't forget that we have resources already prepared for you at the MyVNN.com website on this topic.

We now have a new resource at MyVNN.com.  Check out our Perpetual Animal Events Calendar!
Sincerely,

Cellphones and Smartphones

Woman with smartphone
It's hard to believe that just 15 or so years ago, smartphones were just being developed and it wasn't until 2000 that the first smartphone hit the cell phone market.

Now, a recent survey shows some very interesting results.

89% of US online consumers over the age of 15 own a cell phone.

41% own a smartphone and 48% own a feature phone.

Only 11% don't own a phone.

What should be apparent to you is that

the preponderance of smartphones makes it easy for your clients to log complaints before they even leave your parking lot!

The connection of these mobile devices (and the upcoming popularity of tablets) with social media sites like Twitter and Facebook makes it very easy for people to quickly post their complaints.

Did you know that 50% of smartphone users access their Facebook account at least once a day?  Are they accessing it at your clinic?

So, two things should come to mind.  First and foremost, customer service has got to be the most important thing that your team learns from you.  Second,  always keep an ear to the ground (or in cyberspace) for those occasional concerns that pop up.

Where's Dr. Jim?

Some of you may be wondering why Dr. Jim hasn't made an appearance in recent newsletters.

Well, here's the simple fact...he has been so busy connecting with veterinary professionals around the country, it's almost impossible for him to find the time for generating a column here.  BUT...he assures me that he has several upcoming ones that will knock your socks off!

This weekend, Dr. Jim will be at the AVMA Convention in St. Louis.  He is moderating a discussion  with several key parasite specialists on Saturday.  Look for the AVMA Lunchtime Express Connection in the Exhibit Hall (Booth 2140) from 12 -2 pm.  He won't be in town long, but you can try to catch him on his cell phone - 719-963-6852 if you are going to be there as well and want to say HI!

He will be returning to our VNN offices on Sunday to prepare for our incoming VNN extern!  We are very excited about our new program to help stress the importance of communications and the media within the veterinary profession.  Our first extern is a 4th year veterinary student from Texas A & M.

AND...in all the "spare" time he has, he continues to find ways to improve VNN, continue our work to develop certification criteria for Veterinary Journalists and keep our client friendly site, PetDocsonCall.com functioning.
